Sounds like it is not just "the starter."

?

Strike 1: Pictures are on a trailer outside of a junkyard.

S2: Auto trans is in neutral or drive in one of those pictures yet trans is 100%. OK.

S3. Rear tail lights are smoked black. Which is a big no-no imo. Looks like a teenager had it and messed it up.

Yes what's wrong with it? Since you've posted an ad to a used exhaust system, I'm assuming that needs to be fixed.

Stay away from volkswagons unless you have deep pockets.

And you're going to give up that easily???

Figure out what is making it fail and fix it!

It may be a true statement however you gamble $600-salvage value.

A close friends father gambles on similar used Audi's in the 150k-170k range. He pay his mechanic $100 to check over and usually drives 30k/year and has decent luck.

The difference though is he is Sr Vp at major insurance company and throwing away $1500-$3000 on used vehicle is meaningless to him and he has no shortage of income to cover repairs. Believe or not comes out well ahead.

He typically spends $500-$2000 making them roadworthy.

LOL. The thing as an automatic in it!

I know Volkswagen, as it is all I have ever bought and driven.

The MK4 is a far better car than the interwebz like to admit, most of the problems come from negligent and abusive owners.

However, you NEVER...ever, ever ,ever..want to purchase a slush box model VW from that era or the MK3 era, they are nothing but trouble.

Here we go again...

How is a Volkswagen that doesn't start going to work out better than a Chevy that needs work to pass inspection? At least the Chevy runs... never believe the "just needs a starter" line.

At least your Blazer runs. If you can't afford to get it to pass inspection, you sure can't afford to buy and fix a VW with unknown history. They aren't know for being cheap to work on. Your Blazer is a fairly basic vehicle, which is good for repair costs.

Starter or engine siezed due to over heating/ timing belt etc. Just because the owner says starter does not mean its true! People will shaft you in a minute. remember Caveat Emptor ( Let the buyer beware!).

My thoughts on this car?

No.

No.

And, oh yes, NO!

If it sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true.

Getting your Blazer to pass will cost far less than this money pit on a trailer.

See my previous post in your existential thread...stop spending money you don't have! Stop chasing after every shiny object that catches your attention. Live below your means. You don't even have $600 to spend...you don't even have enough to pay for basic necessities if you were to get laid off.

Drop this idea, seriously, and start being realistic. THERE ARE NO QUICK FIXES TO YOUR PROBLEMS. Stop trying to find them and focus on doing things that will benefit you in the long run.

What about that sounds in any way like a reliable daily driver?

You need a car that:
1. Runs
2. Has a documented service history
3. Has a seller willing to let you take it to an independent mechanic for an inspection

Nothing that says, "Just needs a tune up" (or oil change, or starter, or blinker fluid, or battery, or TLC, or anything).

It's one thing for an ad to say, "These are the flaws the car has," and list them, like having worn tires or scratches and dents. It's quite another to say, "It needs [X]," when X is something relatively cheap and easy. If it needs a starter, let the seller pay $40 at the boneyard and swap it out before listing the car for sale.

Seriously? You even have to ask?

If it was just a starter, why didn't they put in a new starter instead of selling the car for peanuts?

At this mileage, the trans is probably shot. Possibly turbo and engine as well.

I just got a $400 1995 Saturn SL1.

It's getting a gas tank strap made of scrap metal, a used tire, a new exhaust flexpipe, and some spark plugs I pulled from another saturn.

Barring fixing the car you have, this is the kind of heap you should get. Mine even has more than 1/2 tank of gas.
