Mobil. I know, it hurts to read it. Burns the eyes a little. It doesn't say AMSOIL, Valvoline, Rotella, Redline or Royal Purple. Renewable Lubricants, Quaker State, Castrol or Chevron.

Yet they are the largest name in motor oil.

They are the most profitable company of all time.

They are the worlds largest oil provider for basically every racing venue.

Their quarterly revenue equals or exceeds that of the automotive bailout.

And there are a lot of people on this board that hate them. At every opportunity, they will be bashed. If there is a thread about Mobil 1, it is destined to turn negative and have half a dozen other oils being flogged as alternatives. They seem to be the company that many on BITOG love to hate.

I have NEVER in my entire life heard so much Mobil-bashing until I joined this site. I was flabbergast. Where are the engine failures? The awful tear-downs? If the world's largest oil company made an inferior product, I would expect to see these. But I don't. I see UOA's, which are NOT a good indication of engine wear. I see people talking about noise and "feeling", both of which are quite unscientific.

And yet there is Doug Hillary posting bearing and bore pictures. There is Doug providing MILLIONS of Km of real world testing and tear-down experience. And there are those of us who have used their products for more than a decade and experienced nothing but good results and clean engines.

It stuns me to see the negativity toward this company. Regardless of the current Ashland fiasco. This has been an ongoing trend LONG before that. Is it because they are not a sponsor? Is it because we don't have some members with pretty Mobil logos underneath their titles to defend their products in the face of the seeming mass of adversity it has here?

Chris (myself), Frank and Doug. Pretty small clique on here compared to the rest I guess.

I figured I'd just sum up my observations on the latest trend of Mobil-bashing into their own thread.

count me in. while i have watched my favorite lubricant company like a hawk since the company that hires drunken supertanker captains bought them, i have had no indication of any problems. i posted a FIVE YEAR OA on the OA forum and got some static about how it was a newer version, even though the 5 year old OAs i linked to showed the same makeup.

some people just love to hate the leader. at least you don't see Mobil promoting 10,000 points of darkness on the web about oil.

Actually Mobil 1 was the darling of all the oil discussed here. Castrol has always been the black sheep. It has only been in the last couple of years that Mobil 1 started going down hill. I believe it started when TomNY while still at Hatco discovered group 111 in a couple quarts of Mobil 1. It still took a while for Mobil to start to fall. Also terry Dyson stated several times that Mobil 1 was slipping.

Just the way it was,

Don

I think Mobil-1 makes a darn good oil... I don't use it because of what I have seen in my UOA's. To me lower metal counts in my UOA says that my current oil is doing a better job than M1 did in my application. That doesn't mean that M1 is a bad oil or that I would never use it again, because that's just not the case. I choose to use something different because I like seeing lower numbers on my UOA's. M1 might return better results for other people but not for my application, where as my oil choice might do the same in return if the situation were reversed. I would use M1 without hesitation, as it is a great oil.

StevieC: Did you read Doug's tear-down info and the 150ppm of Fe being his condemnation point? A UOA tells you very little about how your engine is wearing. You really don't know if it was wearing "worse" with the M1 or not. You simply know it had more iron in the narrow range of particulate size that a UOA samples. You have no idea of particle content outside that range, which could very well be MORE with other oils.

Really? I have no stake in this company at all. I use their oils, as I also use AMSOIL and Royal Purple products.

I simply see an overwhelming number of people talking negatively about ExxonMobil. So I made a thread about it. I don't call that having an agenda.

And I understand that... That's why I worded my post the way I did. I like seeing lower metal counts on my UOA's that's why I use Amsoil. I didn't say it was better or provided less wear. IMO I like seeing lower counts on metals in my UOA's. I also said that I wouldn't hesitate to use M1 and that I didn't think that it's a bad oil, but a darn good one...

Look at the guy that drove his SAAB 1 million miles on Mobil-1. That to me speaks volumes, but doesn't mean I have to use M1.

I've used Mobil conventional for years, with great results. Just bought 2 5qt. bottles of 5w30 tonight for $11 each. $1 more than Supertech so how could anyone complain.

Mobil for the most part is the base oil of most the BITOG popular oils. If we look at the top 5 oils loved on this forum and then compare them to Mobil....we would be splitting ant hairs!

The rest is just hype!

Hey guys! oil is just like anything else if we all used the same we would not be able to have as many great discussions as we do. I'm happy so many care for their vehicles as much as us. Im having a good time! yall are great

I have used Mobil-1 with great results in the first 80,000KM of my truck but have switched to Amsoil to suffice my OCD for seeing lower numbers on my UOA's. Doesn't mean it's wearing less like OVERK1LL said, but makes me happy. Mobil-1 worked good on my truck and produced good UOA's and I would use it again...

You started this thread!

Are you going to deny the Exxon Valdez?

I'm just busting your nutz, but...

You shown us Mobil 1 has given you stellar results for the past several years. That doesn't mean Exxon can't [censored] up; the grape vine has shown us that large corporations do it daily and would never fess up. Silence is golden (just ask government). Which is why I'd never in my right mind have blind faith in any commercial product.

That's not fair... Everyone makes mistakes and errors happen... XOM is a huge company that ships lots of oil around, and spills happen. It just seemed like the end of the world because of the amount of oil. They have paid way more in taxes than lots of other companies that have intentionally screwed up the environment. Exxon Valdez was an accident, and they have paid through the nose for it as well as in taxes over the years... It just seems like a big deal because they are a big company and the news is [censored]-bent on finding corruption in "Big Business" because it sells more subscriptions. No better than someone who dumps their used oil down a sewer drain but you rarely if never see that in the news and that's intentional. It's water under the bridge now.

No pun intended...
