So, last friday night, after replacing all my signal lights on my ranger to make sure they work, i made a legal right on red while signaling, then the truck bucks from the bad gas still in the aft tank so i pull it over to get out of the stream of traffic.

instantly, a state trooper flies up my [censored] lights blazing and marches up to the window of my stalled truck.

"I pulled you over for not signaling for a right turn."

"..what?"

"License and insurance, now."

*hand over licence* "i don't have my card yet, i just got this truck two days ago and i don't have my new card yet, but i did transfer the policy from my other truck."

"okay." *walks off*

so then he comes back up, demands i get out of the car, and arrests me for not having insurance and driving on a suspended license, except i never missed paying a ticket, ever.

apparently they suspend your licence if you don't pay a special fee every year after getting a no insurance ticket, except they never told me, i never recieved a letter, and i was never informed when it was suspended.

and he refused to believe i had insurance, and he refused to let me call somebody who could verify it with my policy number.

so i go to jail, spend the next 12 hours being denied a phone call, and the only reason i am even out now is because i snuck my phone past the front door and fired a blind text to my mom saying "jail, help."

so, after posting bond, i just got my insurance card proving i was covered, and whenever i get my court letter i'm gonna march down to the courthouse and slam that [censored] down on the counter.

put that in your pipe and smoke it buddy.

so, i watched the tow the grey turd away on a flatbed, but i managed to get it back the next day.

right now, aside the insurance ticket, which i intend to fight, i paid my re-instatement fee, and should be legal in a few days.

in conclusion, Police: there when they want your money, leaving you hang out to dry if you need help.

Yup sounds about right.. What part of Texas was this?

Nice sweeping statement. The three CT state police I know are rational and balanced. Perhaps there is an issue with TX screening process or training. If malcontents are present in the system to a large degree, there is a systematic problem.

Just give a sociopath a badge and you have a cop. Those old boys up around henderson are something else, too. Are you black? Probably not, because you got out of it without getting beat for resisting arrest.

I don't think the police did anything wrong. If the OP had been roughed up or shot then yes, it would have been a problem.

Fortunately for him, he got away easy.

Here in MN they won't arrest you if you don't have your insurance card, they just require that you bring it in and show it within 24 hours of your stop. They will arrest you if you have no drivers license however.

I've been pulled over three times and have never gotten a ticket (always verbal warnings), all three cops were very polite and level-headed in talking to me.

They don't ask for insurance verification in Indiana either (as far as I can remember). But driving with a suspended license is a major no-no.

It does seem a little unamerican for a LEO to not conduct a reasonable investigation to see if his allegations are correct.

You could have done your part though and at least retained your old insurance card even though the VIN was wrong. (They do like to see proof of insurance of some sort!) When I change vehicles I get an instant PDF I can print out on the computer...

Glad to see TX taking insurance seriously, even though this officer took it a little far. Life lesson: Carry insurance!

They ask for your insurance card in MN, but if you don't have it you have to take the time to bring it in to the station within 24 hours, if you have it with you they look at it and hand it back and you don't have to bring it in later.

I don't see the officer being in the wrong at all. You were driving a beater, had no insurance and your license was expired. It's not his job to verify you were sent a letter stating it was suspended. It is his job to make sure people who are driving uninsured with out a license are taken off the road.

I feel for ya brother, and it sucks when you have most of your ducks in a row or when circumstances align perfectly to screw you over. I mean no disrespect toward you, but I don't think your story warrants cop bashing at all.

The worse part is that TEXAS has a huge computer system that tracks all registered vehicles....they know who has insurance or not. The insurance companies feed data to them to be up to date. That cop probably knew you had insurance.

i *HAVE* insurance.

and my license wasn't expired, it was suspended by a computer.

but i didn't know, [censored] my insurance agent is like "uh, your licence isn't showing as suspended.

Welcome to the world of arrest records, impound fees and lawyers fees.

It will forever more show on your background that you've been arrested whether a conviction came down or not. I'm surprised they didn't get your for resisting arrest, threatening a police officer, drunk driving and having drug paraphernalia in your vehicle. It seems to be the way they operate these days.
