Good evening everyone.

I was given DR field and brush mower. It has finish mower attachment, it is older with 11HP BS motor but looks like it has been taken care of.
I have changed ignition coil, oil and belt. It's been working really good. Today it was noticing that transmission belt is slipping more than usual and after checking it out it out I realized that it was very old and rubber was already getting sticky.
While under neath of it I realized that it is pretty "wet" around the transmission pulley like it's been leaking and slinging grease around.
I've been reading about those peerless
transmission and found the grease it requires.
I really don't want to take the whole mower apart to change a seal.
So my question is can I just fill the transmission with other grease (like red and tacky or HD green grease)? I really don't want to spend $60 on a jug of their special grease. Or would be okay to use 85/140 gear lube?

Thanks for your help.

What is used in Peerless transmissions is a specialized grease called Bentonite Grease. It does not need to be changed nor should it be changed. Do not use anything else. There are no seals on these transmissions so you will see seepage. Do not get Bentonite Grease on your cloths, you will never get the stains out.

Is there no seal underneath around the shaft?

Came across some interesting read. Technically I could mix Bentonite grease with Calcium stearate or calcium 12-hydroxystearate with no issues or mix with polyurea (shear stable) grease.

Found some farming forums that talk about John Deere Corn head grease being used interchangeably with bentonite grease because they are polyurea shear stable grease. Found it on fleabay for $20 for two 14oz tubes. Much better than $50 for 32oz of bentonite.

John Deere part number Older number is TY6341, it was replaced by AN102562
