I'm going from conventional to Synthetic in my '04 Monte Carlo. It has 72,000 miles, do i need to use any engine flush type product before switching? I'm gonna use PU, previous oil chages were always done around 3,000 miles, might have gone to 4k a couple times. my plan with PU is to go at least 6,000-7,500 OIC. should i change the oil after 3,000 with first use of PU then go to 6,000?

thanks!

Select a good oil filter like Pure One or Bosch and use it for your 6000-7500 OCI. PU is a fine oil and couple it with a fine filter and you will have no worries. No need to do an engine flush. You had frequent OCI in the past at 3k. Your engine will do just fine.

I had been using conventional synthetic conventional synthetic in my LS400 for more than 15 years. I do 6-7k/6mos with dino and 12-14k/1yr with syn. The car has more than 270k miles and engine is running very good.

You don't need to do any engine flush before switching to syn. I agree with Renegade, you can do a lot longer than 6-7k miles with PU if your driving is not severe such as short trips, stop and go traffic ...

Why switch to synthetic after 72000 miles ?

If engine is running well ie no weeps or leaks not using any oil keep doing what you are doing.

In are hardened and intend to switch regardless then have a read of the link below.

Do not focus on the engine flush bit, but get ready to change the oil filter more often for the first 10000kms.

If it does a lot of short trips the last thing I'd do is longer OCIs with ANY oil.

Syn does not get rid of the byproducts that DO happen each and every time you start the engine. (even in better than normal start up temps that Texas has)

I'd much rather see 4k ocis with conventional than 6k ocis with syn.

Thanks for the advice. I'll stick with PYB with the Monte and go with Ultra in the other car that has a majority of the trips that 20 miles plus.

I switched from dino oil to Synthetic on my '00 Camry (5SFE I4) at about 130k miles (I THINK), and it's now at 180k or so. I first did two OCI's using a "Synthetic Blend" as it was on sale for less than PYB or comparable Dino Oils, and then went full-synthetic. It cleaned up a ton of gunk, so the first few OCI's were short and I went through many filters, but in the end the car seems to like it. Still runs strong

BTW, I'm curious about the link from Amsoil...

In the main passage, as well as in the link to the "Amsoil Engine & Transmission Flush", it describes the process and "advantages" of their product when used in both the vehicles engine AND transmission...

However, at the bottom of the text, it clearly states "Never use a flush in the transmission or differential"... Why the sudden change-of-opinion? Or am I misunderstanding, and it is meant to say "Never use a flush in the transmission of a vehicle while it is driving or under load, as this will cause catastrophic failure due to the extremely low viscosity of the flush"?

Hmm...

Using a flushing agent in the auto trans is likely to casuse transmission failure has been reported in many instances by transmission repair shops.

Reasons why I am not sure. I guess it may loosen so debris and clogg certain components or gunked varnish thatmay interfere with the electronics.

If auto trans flushing is done make sure that only the recommended transmsission fluid is used.

Dropping the pan is the simplest way.

Input from atuo tran specialists is required.

Treb,

Just go ahead and switch anytime you feel it's time. What's left over will eventually blend in anyway eventually will be removed as you make you OCI's.
