You shold have seen the engine in a Road Runner I bought that I tore down that had been run on that crud. Trust me you would have preferred sludge. That stuff was awful. Gunked everything up and turned to a tar like goo inside the engine. Caused a lot of sludge type issues.

Yeah. People think PZ and QS caused sludge ....ARCO Graphite was the real reason.

How do you know that it wasn't just an engine driven and maintained in a manner that would cause sludge

Used the Arco graphite in the 70s in my new 1972 Montego with the 351C engine. No problems at all. Could only find it at Kmart and then they stopped carrying it. Since I changed my own oil, I saved the used oil and still have a couple of gallons of it. I use it to oil car door hinges, etc. Very slippery stuff yet after about 40 years.

I used the Arco graphite in my 70 Camaro for a year or two. Never noticed and difference. Still have the Camaro today and never noticed any problems as a result.

Can you still send this old used oil in for a UOA? Might be interesting eh?

Why is it there is always a person or two on this site who never believe anyone else? Someone relates an actual hands on personal experience and someone has to jump in and call [censored]. I don't get it. Why would I lie about that?

I "KNOW" the sludge like goop was from the Graphite for many reasons. Besides a well documeneted history of causing problems like that, on this car in particular, I know because I bought the car from the original owner who had all of his maintenance receipts. He had all his work done at the local gas station/service center in town. He was religious about 2500-3K OC's and he used Graphite for the OC's every time( He used regular oil maybe 2-3 times as I recall when he had the vehicle serviced elsewhere - shell station ).

He had no problems with it as far as head gaskets or other things that would introduce a foreign material into the oil. He did have an oil pan leak that was repaired at 35K but that would not explain what I found. Besides that was done like 9 or 10 years before I bought the car from him anyway.

The Graphite topic comes up from time to time so I finally went and found the photos of that engine I talk about I tore down that had run on that [censored]. I am going to post a shot of the oil pan. Be aware this engine had a little over 90K on it and had run almost exclusively on Graphite oils. The meticulous maintenance records he gave me when I bought the car showed the oil pan had been removed due to a leaking gasket at approx 35K, so the mess you will see is only 60K worth. I can't believe it didn't blow up after seeing it when we got it apart. NO wonder I had no oil pressure.

The entire pan( and most of the engine internals )was covered in a black, tar like goop, that had the consistancy of cottage cheese. Chunky cottage cheese at that, down in the very bottom( like real sticky blood clots ). If you got it on you you couldn't get it off. Just nasty. Also, the guy who helped me with the engine rebuild said my engine while one of the worst he had seen was typical of engines he tore down that had a steady diet of that crud.

The car was running when I bought it and right up to the time I tore the engine down but it was not running good. I knew it needed help just not this badly.

WARNING - the following photo is not for the faint at heart!!!!

NOTE - what you are going to see is EXACTLY what the pan looked like when we took it off. Nothing in their but the left over oil( I had done a flush and a couple oc's with QS dino trying to help( you should have seen the gobs of goo that came out =

)but finally realized a tear down was in order. I almost fainted when the pan came off. Oh, and btw, this is a photo from 1987 so it is old and was taken with a poor camera. Sorry it isn't better but you get the drift...
