That's not all of it, only syn and blends are kept on shelves. I have tons of conventional boxed up in the basement.

My stash is "down" to around 250 quarts, (haven't counted in a while). The only negative thing I've run into is the temptation to waste oil - that is, change it before it really needs changing simply because I have so much. I've got some oil on my shelf I've had for almost ten years now, (current fill in both cars is 8 year old Delo 15W40)

That's the down side of stashing oil. When the new stuff comes out, you feel committed to using up the old stuff before starting on the new stuff. A good strategy would be to not get more than 2 years worth of oil accumulated at any time.

I like this idea. Maybe don't alternate every oil change, but do 2 or 3 intervals on one oil, then switch to a proven "cleanup" oil for a couple of intervals.

Any other thoughts??? Is there any science behind this.

I'm leaning towards using synthetic on my next change becuase I'll be doing some towing.

I may just use up all the high quality stuff and end up using the ecopower blend when the vehicles are higher mileage.

In very rare circumstances can you deduct more than your cost basis as a tax deduction. Extreme couponers have tried this by getting hundreds of dollars in groceries for a few dollars and then trying to deduct the full value. The IRS doesn't allow it.

Well, that's an interesting question. Apparently for objects bought at discount and held for a year, its valued at full, arm's-length market value. I guess the theory is that it should be treated the same as any other donated object with an unrealized capital gain. For stuff held less than a year, its valued at basis. (i.e. cost). donations valued at more than $5,000 other than cars and some other stuff, require an independent appraisal.

So, the oil hoarder should be able to sell the older part of his stash at least, at the $6.00 price.

If a dedicated BITOGer with 1,500 quarts of oil was maintaining a a vehicle (or fleet, for that matter); how would that car ever get dirty enough to need cleaning? Kira

I see what you mean. I'm thinking about it in the BITOG sense where if you see a speck of varnish down the oil fill hole, it's time to panic.

Well said, but we do have a shotgun to back up the pistol, is that ok?

OP, I'd use up the 10w30 in the Yukon over the summer months.

I rotate stock and would use older first. It's a 5k interval, the SM should be up to it.
