I still have some PenZ PP from about 07 and 08 that I haven't used. When I bought them I had three vehicles that I was doing oil changes on, but now am down to 1. It is kept in the garage, but it doesn't freeze in there. How long should I expect it to still be good or does it really ever go bad?

I guess it depends on conditions, but im still using up torque power stuff that is dated 06 and there is not settling or anything. Personally i would not be worried about using anything that is even 7 or 8 yrs old if it is still sealed and has not been sitting out in the weather. Just me but if it can last a year in a crankcase, it can last a long long time sitting in my shed sealed up. I have found old wolfs head stuff in my grandfathers barn a few years ago that still poured and looked like new and i would hate to guess how old that stuff is. I used it as top of oil for my old Toyota truck.

I date and price mark all my stuff when I put it on the shelf. Still using some Mobil 1 I purchased in 2000 for a little used vehicle. I've heard rumors of additives settling out in some older oils, but have yet to see it in any of mine.

Even if they do settle out a little, i believe you can shake them up and mix them back up. Has anyone ever stored oil and have had it go bad in some way. Maybe condensation or something?

I wouldn't believe much in that article. 15W40 needing to be changed more often?

"Mineral Characteristics
10W-40 15w40 Basic protection for a variety of engines
Oil needs to be changed more often"

Look at this gem: "Well most of the diesel oil specification oils can be used in old petrol engines for cleaning, but you want to use a low specification oil to ensure that you do not over clean your engine and lose compression for example. Generally speaking, an SAE 15W/40 diesel engine oil for about 500 miles might do the trick. "

Over clean your engine? Everyone, QUICK - dump your PP NOW, before it's too late.

I've used 6-10 year old HDEO oil without issue. In fact, the next change on one of my Jeeps will be with Chevron Delo 15W40 from 2002. I haven't a worry in the world.

A little off topic - This article states: In 1996 the EPA forced that to be dropped to 800ppm and then more recently (2004?) to 400ppm - a quarter of the original spec.

IIRC, the SM spec limited ZDDP to < 1000 PPM. I know I've seen SM VOA's with higher than 400. Anyone?

I called Shell Canada and they told me 7 years would be no problem in a cool/dry/dark storage like a basement.
