Sorry for all the threads I've posted in the last few weeks since joining. I'm enjoying enlightening myself.

My 07 LR3 is due for an oil change. It has the Jaguar 4.4 V8 with 150k on it. It's whole life it's run on either Valvoline WB or Castrol GTX, both 5W30 (I think that's what I've used for the past 2-3 years). Run it 5000 miles, even though LR says go 7500. 8qt sump. Doesn't leak oil, and it doesn't burn (at least not enough to need to top it off between OCIs). Should I just keep going with either of those or would there be a preventative advantage to switching it to Maxlife or another HM oil?

Thanks!

There's your answer.

You have three Jeeps, and a Land Rover. I'm absolutely sure there's something else you need to go fix/repair, right?

Lets not screw around with what's already working like it should and cause another issue...

Ain't that the truth, never ends!

Thanks everyone, I was leaning this way too.

I don't wait until they are dripping - but want to see seepage from under vehicle (appears to be worse on wet seals) the nominal miles on the clock, and toss in a bit of common sense over the vehicle age ...

Honestly. ..I'd go high mileage if it was me. I do understand the if it's not broken don't fix it mentality. ..but what I don't get is the hate on high mileage oil. I've used it for over 80000 miles on my old sport trac after switching over a lil bit over 100000 miles. Still running great at over 210000 with no major leaks. IMO high mileage oil is good oil.

Agreed

Don't high mileage oils also have a stronger add pack as well? More anti wear, higher tbn, etc. I really see no negatives with high mileage oils.

The semi synthetic base oil is better that those you were using, helping the cleaning up of the block and ring pack. I'd use a syn blend in older engines.

My 4.0 SOHC engine does great with high mileage oil. I'm sometimes tempted to try
regular synthetic blend sometimes but I don't know I can go back to regular oil now
just how it runs.

I have used Castrol GTX high mileage in the past with good results also, car ran smooth.
Would Edge High Mileage do the same?

I wonder where TBN and other indicators would be at 7500 miles vs 5000 miles on conventional oil.

I'm seeing many extended oil changes where the TBN gets between 1 and 3.

I'm thinking that at that point, some deposits have occured. After 100,000 miles, maybe sooner, who knows, those cumulative deposits may begin to mean something.

Cut the oci to 5000 miles, maybe when the TBN is above 3 (PQIA's suggestion), and maybe the cumulative deposits are minimal.

If it does not leak or have serious valve guide oil seal issues causing a high oil consumption it's not a good idea to use an HM oil.
Just decide which major brand oil company you like, then use their engine specific oil guide to see which oil they think is best, BUT use the .co.uk or .de web site to avoid thin oils being listed due to CAFE fuel economy regs. Your owners manual can be used as a cross check of the API/Acea or SAE group requirements. If the engine is rather worn and has a high oil consumption, move up one grade.

Most of them are just cheap conventional base oils that have extra seal conditioners and swellers added. Some of them are better than others and Mobil do seem to be top dog in HM oils in that repect.

If you use seal swellers the oil seal will press on the associated shaft with more force than is
normal and although that is good news IF the oil seals are worn, it is bad news if they are not, as they will wear out faster. Seal conditioners increase the friction between seal and shaft, which also increases seal wear rates, so regardless of which type of chemical additive is used in an attempt to help old oil seals work better, they are not worth using if you don't have bad seals or leaky gaskets.

HM oils are also supposed to contain more detergents and AW additives, BUT that is not true of most of them, just take a look at their VOA's.
Liqui Moly don't make an HM oil and they insist that it's better to stick with an approved or recommended oil and use enough stop leak additive (Motor Oil Saver) to reduce leak rates or oil consumption.
