Working on another starter, this time for the Explorer. Found invoice, replaced in 07, its warrantied. Advance "Palladium" Brand, I'm sure it is something else now.

Got the occasional "Click" but it would always start the next time. Usually when hot. This starter was positioned by masochists. I was able to get the top bolt out out with a small 1/4" Gearwrench and 13mm(the socket set, awesome must have tool), and a large box end to break the fastener free. You almost have to be double jointed to get around the differential. 10 years ago I did it thru the body, feed a long extension. Both ways suck. Lucky I used anti-sieze on the bolts. I remember when I did it first they were impossible to turn and had some galling. You must pull the starter to access the terminals, so it is critical to know what caused the problem. Will tackle the terminals tomorrow, but they are a bit crusty, not even close to really corroded like the 18 yo MGM I did.

Thing is, if I bring the starter to Advance to test, can I be sure it is good to install? I will check the wiring, but once it is apart the test could be inconclusive because there may or may not have been terminal corrosion. They currently pass basic 12V tests with almost no voltage drop.

A 2008 Honda I service was doing the same thing. Took the starter to Advance, and it passed their test. Had a hunch the machine was wrong. Bought a rebuilt starter, and installed it. Have not had any problems since the new one was installed. Just make sure the battery is good. The Honda had a brand new battery in it.

Bad spot on the starter motor causes that. This is your warning that it is going to quit on you.

Well went to take the wiring off and its gone now. Didn't take much to twist off the key terminal. About 5 inch ounces to destroy it. Maybe that was the issue. The terminal was attached to the solenoid with almost a piece of solder. Took a bit of work the separate the terminal from the wire loop connector. On the stock MGM the stud broke it was on so strongly. Guess they used some off the boat parts. There is a bit of corrosion on the terminals, so it is either the terminal, corrosion, or a dead spot. Don't care about this truck so I'll get a new free POS tomorrow.

Took a part starter, has visible burns and damage on the armature. The brushes look spent too. So much for a premium reman

. Likely never changed. Nothing wrong with the OEM ford one except the braided wire rotted out. Couldn't find a source for it back then.....

Case closed......
