So I'm considering giving synthetics a shot.

My "new" ride is a '93 Mercury Cougar with the 3.8 liter engine. It has 120k on it. I've always used cheap dinos for short intervals but now I'm living in an apartment where I can't do my own changes, plus my driving now could be considered severe service, and I'm not sure how easy on oil this engine is. So to stick with dinos I'd have to shorten my intervals which would be more expensive then a long OCI with a good synthetic, I think.

If this was your ride, what synth would you use? I don't want to apply my "whatever is on sale" mantra to synthetics, as I really haven't used them very often.

Watch the head gasket and ignition components on that car. Had friend with one of those, and it caught fire on her just after she got out of it from a drive.

Was that after she switched over to synthetics....hehe.

yeah head gasket is an issue in that car...all the more reason to use syn...I'd use either Mobil-1 HM formula, or Pennzoil Platinum...but FYI many report good results with the Wal-mart house oil SuperTech full-syn...depends on how long of OCI u want...

the only two commonly available FULL-syn High-mileage oils are Valvoline Max-life Synthetic Formula, and Mobil-1 HM Formula.

If the engine is worn or leaks then these would be good oils to consider for a full-syn choice...but if you are comfortable using a non-hm oil then depending on how long u want to go, PP seems to be a favorite or Mobil-1 (silver cap). Only problem is, I culd not justify going an "extended interval) on a higher-mileage vehicle...maybe 6k tops on syn...but not 10k or something.

x2

3.8's are known head gasket eaters.

The head gasket has already been done.

Running very quiet and smooth, and doesn't seem to use oil, but I've only been driving it a few weeks.

I've never considered the M1 HM oil, maybe I'll try it.

I'm kind of itching to try something boutique. I've heard Redline doesn't fare to well with fuel dilution, so I'm scratching that.

I also have a good stash of Q Horsepower from the Wal-Mart clearence, but I'm not sure if I could extend intervals significantly with that.

"Whatever is on sale" is not any type of mantra.
It simply offers the opinion that there is not that much difference nowadays in similar oils.
So... " "

For a full synthetic I'd use Valv Synpower, PP, or QS Synth for 7500mi. You could use M1 EP if you don't care about the added cost, although I would not run the m1 15k without a UOA halfway thru.

Well from what people say on here, Mobil-1 HM is a hearty oil with lots of good additives. I would never go an extended OCI on a HM vehicle, but I understand the convenince. If it is a healthy motor, give M1 HM a try for 6k and then maybe consider a UOA and maybe even push it to 7500k if you really want to save from doing those oil changes in an apartment complex. The M1 HM has a more robust additve pkg than regular non-HM synthetics...I think it would be an excelent choice for an extended OCI...I have used it and would probably continue to do so if it were not for the fact that my mental-health limit is so far only 3-4k OCI. Funny, before I used to know as much about cars back in the early 90's I went 5-8k on Castrol dino in my old Nissan p/u...it took it okay...but then in the late 90's I got more into cars with the purchase of a Camaro and also began a job at O'Reilly's at the time and took an interest in learing more about cars.

At least I did the oil changes myself back in the early 90's though cause I had a redneck buddy in school who had a souped up monte carlo and he came over one day and told me I needed to change the oil and taught me how. My dad was a city slicker who just took his cars to wal-mart for a change about twice a year so that is why I never learned from him. My stepdad was a blue collar type who owned a carpet store and fished and hunted, and knew how to change oil I am sure, but just flat did not care...Oh he build decks, layed carpet, fixed outboard motors, etc...but he topped off with the cheapest oil they had and did not get regular changes done. As a matter of fact I think in his '85 suburban 4x4 he got new, I bet it NEVER got a diff, tranny, or x-fer case service done. I think he took his into a little mom & pop gas station about once or twice a year though for an oil change and topped it off in the mean time LOL. I never had the guidance needed, although one of my other uncles did his own and told me about it as a kid, but I never re-approached him as a teenager to learn since I had no other oil changers to teach me...Thank God for Will...the monte carlo guy with the 350 bored .0030 over, glass packs, and the Summit Racing sticker on the back LOL.

Before that pickup, I had an '86 Chevy Celebrity with a 2.8 V6..I got the car from my mom with 113k on it...I had no idea that cars even needed oil changes and I know she did not have many done to it...so I drove it with black oil for a whole year and just topped it off every now & then. The one time that same friend tried to help me change that oil (right before I got rid of it), we discovered the oil drain plug was broke of flush with the pan and abandoned the attemt to do an oil change on it. instead it was sold as it was and a few months later the motor died on the purchaser (my uncle). He was also a man of no maintenance and looking back I bet the motor was sludged up and the oil filter was clogged and he probably did not even top it off like I did and it wnet dry...who knows...but that is my little confession...hope you enjoyed it.

LOL...good stories! Love em'!

Anyway, I'd use M1 HM 10W-30 in that car. It looks to be a really robust oil that will work well in an older engine....
