If you omit cleaning the crank oil feed holes, you are asking for trouble. Even if you shortcut it by not drillning out the plugs. you should use several cans of brakeclean or the like & push the "straw" into the holes- repeat until clean. Too much trouble? It's your motor...........

Cleaning the sludge trap was what you always did on a British Twin when you had it apart. With no oil filter, the sludge trap was a centrifugal filter.

why don't they just drop it back in the hot tank with the plugs removed?

Sludge generally is caused by the acids created from poor crankcase ventilation. Other reasons, too, I'm sure
