What is the difference in the API GL (4 or 5) spec and the HD spec of SHAES-256 rev C and the SHAES-429? I've done some exhausting reading, but coming up empty minded!

Well, the simple explanation is GL 4 or 5 are API standards whereas SHAES are Dana Specific specifications that may go above API standards.
I found this PDF & on page 6 it shows different mileage change requirements depending on HD or Medium Duty trucks. Also Line haul vs Vocational interval.

Use GL 5 instead of GL 4 since it's more robust.

However, if you have a Dana axle you're putting this in you need to go by what Dana specification is but if you can find API GL-5 with that specific Dana specification then voila.
