Hi guys, have a 1996 Yamaha Virago 750 and installed Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the final drive last night. Visually, it was very surprising....a bright turquoise gear oil. Hmmm

I just did a search for all the threads on BITOG < 1 yr old for this product and found some interesting comments. Having read all that, I'm wondering if I made the right choice. I simply wanted the best oil available for the shaft drive. Not really concerned about the product's cost, as it only holds a few ounces.

I have been reading a LOT of good things about Amsoil Severe Gear, but have discovered that you can't buy it anywhere, and can only be procured by having it shipped. Even though cost isn't a major factor in this decision, I've ruled out Amsoil because the shipping brings the price of ONE bottle of oil to more than $22. That I can't justify.

So, my questions are: Have I made a mistake with Redline Shockproof? Is it more suited to racing and therefore requires frequent changes? Can I expect it to foam up and run out the vent?

If I have messed up, what oil do you guys suggest?

Thanks for any input!

I spoke to someone at Redline and he suggested I put in MTL (I was expecting him to say Redline 75W-90 gear oil). I didn't put much stock in that recommendation so I went with the advice from the guy that runs the shop where I bought the Shockproof. He thought the Heavy was too heavy but otherwise highly recommended Shockproof. I guess I'm a really visual person so it was very strange to see a pretty golden oil pouring out of the final drive and strange turquoise soup going in.

I have been using heavy shock proof oil in my Moto Guzzi transmission for 40,000 miles. I drained it thinking it needed to be replaced and found zero wear metal on the magnetic drain plug. The oil looked just like it did when I put it in. There was only a very small amount of metal on the final drive magnet. It appears to provide very good protection. It also made the gear whine less noticeable than the oil that came in the bike.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll see what happens when I ride it long enough for it to get to normal operating temp (I haven't ridden it since I changed the fluid).

I use the shockproof heavy in my harley 6 speed. Very nice shifting and good noise abatement. Dave at RL said it can go 30,000 miles in a harley trans. I will run it 20k since that is several seasons wear. But I recommend it. FWIW there are 3 viscosities of the shockproof. The MTL is a 70w80 and the MT90 is a 75w90. One of the 3 should do the trick for you.

I am using Shockproof Heavy in my Guzzi transmission and final drive. Spoke with Redline about it 2 years ago or so. Guzzi dealers recommend it. A lot of Harley guys run it in thir transmissions on the larger twins (non-sportser).
