For 65 y/o female to e-mail and share pictures of kids/grandkids. Goes on Facebook. Plays that Candy Crush game. That's about it. Older eyes need a good monitor, would like to know what's good in that department too. It has to be Windows. She has no desire to learn a new OS. Had good luck with Dell.

Buy a Dell AIO. I bought a 'refurb' XPS27 on clearance for about $800; the monitor is phenomenal and just trying to match the monitor alone will still run nearly $500. That doesn't even include the fact it had a 2TB HD, 32GB SSD, and i7-4770S with 16GB of RAM.

Even though it was a refurb, I have not had a single issue in nearly 4 years of use.

I have a 23+ inch AIO touch screen refurbished from Dell that's close to 4 years old now and have had zero issues. Wish I would have stayed with Windows 8 but that's another story.
Will probably get a 27 inch latter this year and get a SSD for it. I help with moderating a heating stove forum so the computer gets lot of use come fall with posting manuals and pictures. Best upgrade for the system was a wireless keyboard and a dual monitor stand to get it off the desk.

What windows OS is she running now?

She might be learning a new OS if the machine comes with W10

Buy a refurb business machine; generally they don't come precluttered with try and buy

Desktop OR Laptop ? ? ?

My Desktop is a Dell Inspiron One
What I like about it is that the 'workings' are behind the 20" Monitor / NO Tower sitting on floor.
Also has built-in Speakers.

Bought in 2014 for 430. plus tax.

Does it have to be brand new? You simply can't beat the cost/performance of the off-lease refurbs. I stopped building my own systems because it was just too stupid cheap not to go with an ex-lease, and the performance difference was not anything I'd notice. For the type of usage you describe, it would be ideal.

I picked up a HP Z600 workstation with dual Xeon CPU's, 12gb RAM, a halfway decent workstation graphics card (more than enough for desktop use, the only issue would be 3D gaming), with 2TB HDD for $300 a couple weeks ago. These things sold for upwards of 6 grand when new, 3-4 years ago. Thing is sexy as [censored] too, built like a tank; much better than anything I could build. Just needed an SSD, best purchase decision I've made in a long time!

She only needs the bare minimum. A small desktop/monitor combo or even an all-in-one would work great and are inexpensive.

All-in-one is enticing. Have no problems with a refurb. She uses the free upgrade Windows 10 now. I agree that bare minimum is all that is needed.

Check out the Microsoft refurbs on Newegg. I've purchased two of them within the past year and they have been flawless.

Refurb is a great choice. I have a business grade refurb. Paid 120$ for it. Get a 23-24 inch monitor and for 250$ you are more than set. Business grade hp or dell refurb is how id go.

I just built this HP Workstation for internet browsing, all eBay - $80 for the chassis, $14 for the ATI video card, $30 for a Win7 disk with COA, and $100 for a 256GB SSD. Came with 4GB RAM and DVD RW. Has 8 USB ports including 2 on the front. Mic and headphones in back or front (both). I drive a nice LG monitor. Set resolution as needed for her sight ...

So the question is are you building it for her? Or are you just buying ...

HP business class computers are good. They generally have good sound systems built in. Can not say the same for Dell... Usually somewhat noisy ...

Does she Skype? Does the monitor need built-in camera and mic? Do you need to drive external speakers?

How much desk space does she have? Can a tower sit next to her desk?

This HP workstation has variable speed fans so as long as there is not much heat (no HDD spinning), it's very quiet. If you get video with large heat sink and no fan, it's even quieter ...

If just buying, I'd look at refurbed HP workstations from Microsoft with SSD instead of rotating media ...

Monitor is your choice. Many folks are now switching to HDMI flat screens ... They work fine

My wife bought her last puter from COSTCO and loves it. She especially likes the Concierge Service for two years. Anytime she has an issue, they fix it pronto over the net and a friendly. They make it much nicer for her.

I don't need that, or want that. But your older lady might ...
