We just got a 1995 Lexus ES300 with a 3.0 V 6 engine. We had to get a car to make most of our local trips in because the gas mileage in my wife's Tahoe was killing us. My question is that the owners manuel states to change the oil and filter every 12 months or 7500 miles. Can you do this with any oil filter and oil, such as the pureone filter. What does everybody else think?

The Pure One is fine.

How dirty is the previous oil? Going 7500 miles on a just-purchased vehicle that wasn't routinely maintained may be too long... especially when using a high mileage oil with full synthetic - that removes gunk at a higher level than normal dino.

If that engine is dirty & not maintained well, that filter could get clogged prematurely - plus ticks or clatter could be heard from loose particles inside.

If the inside condition of the engine is unknown to you, better keep an eye on the dipstick & an ear to the engine with that oil & length of your OCI.

I say it's more than possible, but I would cut it down to 3-4k if it's used for stop & go city driving & short trips. My car recommends 7,500 or 6 month oil changes, and the previous owner was brave enough to try it once, and it didn't hurt anything. No sludge, etc. But she was also an elderly lady who babied the car, so the conditions were more ideal. Also, this was done with bulk dealer conventional, and a -shock- Honda A02 Fram oil filter! I think a PureOne & MaxLife Synthetic would handle it fine. But like I said, I would only do 7,500 miles if it was mostly highway miles.

Buy a filter from Lexus/Toyota and use a name brand conventional 5W30. At 3k on this filter/oil, change it and take an oil sample that you will send for analysis. Put in same filter/oil and leave for as long as the oil analysis suggests. Repeat as necessary.

Hope this help,

Jack

If I were you, I'd go with the Mobil 1, M1-102. These filters are rated to whatever the oil recommends. So, if your using your oil for 12 months or 15000 miles, the filter will last that.

The_Champ- So can he run 7500 OCI and re-use the filter to extend its life to 15,000 miles?- Unscrew it, pour the old oil out, fill with new clean oi, re-oil the gasket, and screw back on?

The filter would work at that kind of interval, but thats not how Mobil 1 warranties or recommends the use of their filter. Mobil 1 guarantees that the filter can be used with any oil for the time length that oil can is recommended, 7500,1500,etc. Mobil can't just go around telling people that the filter can be used for 15000 miles everytime one is put on a vehicle. You'd have people changing their oil every 3000 mi but keeping the filter on for 5 intervals. But again, this filter can last an interval like that, but it's not what the manufacturer recommends.

There should be a foot note at the bottom of the page that says to follow that regimen only if the car is operated under environmental conditions where the air entering the engine is perfectly clean and contains no particulate matter what-so-ever.

Well, I'll just repeat my recommendation. Toy/Lex filter, decent oil, run 3K and sample. We have a 12 year old car with an unknown history and it's a relative to a "gel" monster. Get a baseline from the sample and work from there. Anything else is gambling.

Feeling lucky?
