Where I live I have the following major brands of gas available: Mobil, Sunoco, Citgo, Hess and Getty. Generally speaking, is any one known to be better than the others? Which has the better additive package?

Currently, I switch btwn Mobil and Sunoco every 5K miles or so. Mobil seems to be more $$ Than the others, especially Sunoco. Don't know much about Hess.

Where does the gas come from? It may all come from the same distributer.

Where I live we have 2 distributers. Beck oil which is Shell and goodspeed which is Chevron. These 2 supply all the gas stations around here.

The truck goes to the 76 station and unloads some fuel, then he drives across the street to either the AM/Pm or the liquer store. He then heads back, gets filled up again and delivers to the 7-11 and another liquer store.

Around 2AM the Arco trucks begin lining up at the shell distributer.

So I doubt if you have that many distributers. Prolly 2 or 3 that deliver to the various stations.

Isn't gasoline a commodity traded on an exchange?

If it is then wouldn't that make all 87 octane gasoline identical?

Identical until someone adds an additive like Techron or what ever.

Audi Junki,

Why Mobil so low? I always thought Mobil and it additives were pretty good.

In many or most places, it is the same gas. Or at least the pre-additive product. Bulk fuel distribution depots will often pump the same product regardless of brand, with only the additive package added at the end differing. I'd simply say, go with a name brand (you never know what you're getting with independent brands) and go by price. If your ride runs better on one brand than another (I suspect this is the exception, rather than the rule), go with that brand(s). All brands must pass federal deposit control (detergency) specs, although it's possible that some additive packages work a bit better than others.

Can anyone confirm that Sunoco gas is PA contains ethanol? I have heard this and my vehicle consistly get better mileage on other fuels.

Unfortunately no Chevron Where I am in NY. Wish they had it though.

When I started the post I should have been more clear about the question. I realize that all base stock gas is often from the same source. My question is really which brands of those I listed uses the best add pack. Sorry for the confusion.

It think that they have to label it if ethanol is used in the fuel. FWIW ..I don't get good numbers with Sunoco for some reason. Now if your in the eastern part of the state ..you may have oxygenated fuel ..which apparently doesn't do well in some older injected engines in terms of mileage.

Commonly Available in MN

BP
Super America(Ashland)
Holiday(local)
Shell
Mobil/Exxon
No name stations

A couple others, but those are the most common.

Sorry no Chevrons.

Which would be best?

Yup Chris, Buddy of mine owns a gas station. He usually work with what he calls is "JOBBER". They gets gas from anywhere, but his station has a brand called conoco. ha ha ha...

an old friend of mine was a Std Oil Engr
his advice always is:

"Everybody cuts corners on the additives but everybody cheats on different ones. The best thing to do is rotate brands frequently."

There's a guy around here who runs a handful of Citgo stations. I've heard that he cheats on gas-- although given the distribution network, I'm not sure what that means. On the other hand a company like QuikTrip dominates the St. Louis market, even though they have no refining capacity anywhere as far as I know. It seems to me that a company with many owned c-stores is going to be more uniform than some small mom and pop operation that might find a way to cheat, no matter what brand name is on the pump.
