ok, I drive over 100 miles a day, same route for over a year. have always used M1, and one batch of Valv Syn. MPG is generally 36-38. two weeks back I change to PYB and the last 3 tanks have been an even 40 mpg!?!?!?!?!?!? this cant be!!! toyota echo. 1.5L engine 48k miles.

good thing I used a Fram orange filter - that should catch all of the sludge!

What viscosities of M1 and PYB are you talking about?
Are you sure you did not stop using AC, weather was colder, you drove slower, or bought different brand of gas?

I always run 5w30 in the echo. normally with the cooler weather the MPG goes down. altho we actually had hot and cold weather, so some of it was A/C. and construction just started, so I have more stop and go. I cant explain. this car, tho, has the widest variance of any car I have ever owned - it seems to be finicky. it can range from 34-40 with only minor differences in driving conditions.

My car runs smoother on PYB than any othe oil. Is this also just in my mind? Or, does the Grp II+ base stock of an oil make a diff?

If so, the shift from 38 to 40 that you reported is meaningless. Different gas pumps click at different settings.

Not sure about the PYB but I go back and forth from Val Syn and PP in my 04 Maxima and I get more mpg when I'm running PP. At least it seems that way to me from what I read on my onboard fuel computer.
