I tried searching these forums yet again, but have come up empty handed.

I've had a similar discussion before about paper filters lasting for a year long OCI, but I need to revisit this as the 1 year mark is coming up. I didn't feel quite comfortable leaving the Motorcraft filter on there for a year, and went with an Amsoil EaO filter. For the price and how much the vehicle is actually driven, do I really need that expensive of a filter? No, unless it is the only one that is going to be OK to leave on the car for that long. I am also going to be jumping down from Amsoil SSO to Amsoil ASM.

Essentially, I'm looking for a filter that will:
1. last me my one year OCI
2. filter very well (P1 is like 99% or something like that?)
3. maybe cost less than the Amsoil EaO filter (again, I will use this filter if another will not last as the length of time required)

As always, I appreciate the answers and any recommendations I get here!

What vehicle? Motor? Type of driving? (I'm thinking a Ford Mustang but want to make sure)

If you are depending on Amsoils warranty I think you have to change the filter out using the MFG recommended interval.

Thanks, bill

Bill: Sorry. That's a "duh" on my part leaving that out. It's a 2002 Ford/Roush Mustang GT with the 4.6L SOHC V8, non-FI, with about 43,000 miles. As for type of driving, I generally drive it fairly spiritedly. I have no warranty anymore nor am worried about anyone's oil warranty, but am just looking for the best option overall. I simple chose the Amsoil EaO last time because I knew it would last me my year long OCI and I needed a filter sooner than later. This time, I still have a couple of months to decide exactly what I'll be going with on this vehicle.

Bottom_Feeder: I have been running that filter on my Neon for awhile, and is not something I would rule out. They are pretty good filters!

Exactly. If the mileage is below the OCI mark in a years time, then just about any filter used with full synthetic oil will be good for once a year oil changes.

Example - if you change oil every 7500 miles when using full synthetic, and you only put 5000 miles on it in a year, then run it for a year. This is what I do with my Vette with Mobil 1 5w30.

Use a PureONE, WIX or NAPA Gold with your favorite full synthetic oil and you'll be good to go.

I am right around 1,000 miles for the year. My concern is with the paper material not lasting that long, not the filter's inability to filter that whole time.

All my cars get oil changes only once a year. The paper filter media are fine, and nitrile ADBVs are still supple.

I have used filters made by Wix, Champion, Delphi, Purolator, and Mahle, and they have all been fine with 1 year in service (and low miles).

If that's the case, I'll save a bit of my money and go with the P1! IIRC, last time when I asked about the paper, I was getting mixed answers, which is why I just settled on the EaO since I needed it soon.

Thanks for the help thus far guys! I appreciate it! Since I do have some more time though, if there is proper cause for another choice in filters, I'm open ears!

Go to Amazon, get a 2 pack for ten bucks of P1's. Call it a day.

I've cut quite a few open, I wouldn't have a problem even with the SuperTech for a year and 10,000 miles. Really, the "paper" filters have no problem with that timeframe and likely much longer. But the P1 is my favorite based on what I've seen.

I vote for the Motorcraft. The Pure One, K&N and I think Mobil 1 filters have the relief valve on the dome end of the filter. I got start up noise using a Mobil 1 on a 4.6. Going back to the 820S stopped it. After that I started searching around and many people swear by only the 820S or the Ford Racing equivalent for that very reason. Either will last a year no problem. Ford's spec places the relief valve where it is for a reason in my opinion.

Non FI? As in, not fuel injected??

Are you missing a zero? ONE THOUSAND miles a year?

The MC or any other cheap(er) filter will serve you well over that mileage span. Any filter will.

Over 1,000 miles you will get no benefit out of any finer filtering filter.

There is no fear of media degredation for one year.

I run HDEO and Wix filters for low miles, but three years, in my 1966 Mustang. Why three years? Becuase I get bored and just can't wait for an OCI pushed out to four years ...
