I pulled a PureOne PL14477 off my 02 Camry yesterday. It was in service for 5K and 4 months. Upon taking it off I noticed the can was wet with oil. In fact the PureOne label was peeling off because of oil disolving the glue behind. I found no abnormality of the gasket. I always oil my gasket and twist it on for 3/4 of a turn after contact. The old filter is dirty so it is hard to tell, but I suspect that the leak came from the crimp between the can and the base plate.

The leak was very minor - I park in the garage and never saw a drop on the floor.

This is one of the newer PureOnes with the Wix style full length center tube.

Tossed on an other PureOne and called it the day.

I think another post reported a crimp seam failing. In that case, IIRC, the can spun off at the crimp seam ..leaving the threaded base plate on the engine

Does not get worse than that. Who has tools to take that base plate off safely? You can't drive it to a shop, you can't back it off the ramps.

I recently developed an oil leak in my Nissan...a bad drip...I got under the car to inspect and noticed after drying things off that the oil filter was soaked in oil!!...I!! was pretty surprised, never having seen this in my 40 years of doing my own changes!!...I changed the filter, and oil with 10/30 Maxlife( to play it safe) , and a Purolator filter...NO LEAKS.!!....The leaking filter was a Supertech, and it seemed to me to be leaking from where the can meets the base...problem is now I am always looking under my 3 cars for drips!!..

Crimp seam - phobia. A crippling affliction. It would be crimp seam-paranoia ...except that it's real in origin. It's not like you "believe" that your crimp seam will fail ..you merely have anxiety over the irrational fear that it will fail.

Perhaps we need a Therapy forum.

Mr. Allan, that's a fantastic idea. Hello, my name is Titan, and I excessively tighten oil filters, even though I know better. I just can't help myself...I mean, if I can still get it off with just my hand when I change it, how could it be too tight? But, 3/4 of a turn after the gastket touches is just NOT enough. However, I think I am salvageable, because I do believe 5w-20 protects my Ford 4.6 V-8 just fine. Please help me.

Gary...Yes, I guess I now suffer from Crimp Seam Phobia, " CSP", but for good reason...I recently bought a used Camry, that had a STRIPPED DRAIN PLUG from the previous owner...he blames Jiffy Lube...in any case I had to deal with that problem...so, I also suffer from Stripped Drain Plug syndrome, or SDP...you can add that one to your list...treatment, a beer and cigar during the change...oh yea some 60's rock on the garage fm helps alleviate the tension too.....

Great post there Gary! I suffer from several of those.
