PTO/angle gear oil

In my 2 Volvos, the front AWD PTO(Volvo calls it an angle gear) they spec a 75/85 or 90. No idea if OE is syn. or not. These run HOT. Hot enough, that when tracking the one , for 15 min stints, it started to melt the sticker off the case. They only hold about .8L. I wonder if I would be better served by going to a 75/140? I did swap them both(and rear diffs) to amsoil severe gear 75/90.
 
is the setup on the AWD similar to the newer Ford PTU's? (power transfer unit)
the PTU's on the fords are all spec'ed for 75w140 and you probably wouldn't have any issue running it vs. the 75w90 or 80w90
