There is no fuel efficiency difference of any significance among the vehicles you cited. The new Equinox, with the 1.5 GDI turbo that burns 87 regular, gets 26 mpg city and 30+ on the road. You should have cited full size cross overs and pickup trucks. That is where obtaining a Malibu or Camry instead would result in significant fuel savings.
