Post your latest oil change

2008 Pontiac Grand Prix, 3.8L ("the 3800") non-supercharged, 170,148 miles on car

Out: Mix of Castrol Conventional and Mobil Super HM 10w-30, Purolator PL10111 Oil filter
In: 4.5 Quarts Delo XLE 400 10w-30 Synthetic Blend (CK-4/SN), ACDelco PF47E

The Series III 3800 is spec'ed for 5w-30, but I like running 10w-30 (spec for Series II) during the warmer months.

This car consumes about 1 quart every 1,000 miles (bad piston rings). Other than the oil consumption, the car is great. I'm sure there will be little to no difference in consumption, but for [censored] and giggles I decided to throw in diesel oil which I found on sale and also happened to be dual rated CK-4/SN. I plan on leaving this fill in until November/early December, which will probably be somewhere around 7k-10k miles. Any input appreciated.

Scuse my ignorance but why running a 10w30 when its hot and not a 5w30 all year long ? a 30 is a 30 isnt ?

Especially in a conventional the 10w30 has much less viscosity index improvers which can make it a more stout oil apparently. This is even true with synthetics in a lot of cases which I used to be unaware of. I've recently switched to 10w30 in my old engines because of this.

I run the 10wt in the summer because I am unsure when the blowby occurs (when it's cold or hot or maybe even both, which I assume) so the 10W, even if it's not 0 degrees out, will be a tad bit thicker at startup. Also since 10w30 is obsolete for newer cars in the US, I have been able to find great deals on it. The oil I took out of here I paid $1/qt for name brand oil (and $10 for the whole oil change).

As caprice_2nv said, it does have less viscosity index improvers so it *should* hold it's grade better (theoretically, and 5w30 has been known to shear to a 20 after a few thousand miles but may be less common with newer API oils) and therefore also has more "lubricating oil" in it.

I personally think that anyone who has a car spec'ed at an Xw-30 weight, it is beneficial to just put 10w-30 in during warm months but I'm sure there are scientific reasons why the manufacturers recommend a 5w-30 or a 0w-30. I know that PYB 10w-30 has great results for people with higher mileage cars, even those spec'ed for a 5w-20 weight.

Only 5000 km's on the used oil but a mechanic at where my son did his co-op said frequent oil changes are imperative with this engine so my son ate that up.
30% was remaining and I told my son he could easily do 2 OLM revolutions using this oil and filter combo. Of course, dad knows nothing and this Midas mechanic knows it all.

Took the car to the dealership for a TSB. They changed the oil with their bulk when i made no such request. The Service Writer i usually go to apologized and they gave me new engine and cabin air filters. I wasn't that upset since these guys have always been great. Since they don't know what brand the bulk is ( only that its a blend), when i got home....

Yes, and they really are good guys. They know I'm not one to take advantage of a situation. But as a company, i guess they have to make sure some manner of compensation was extended.
