I think people underestimate how much fuel costs when it comes to MPG one can get with their vehicle. For most, it is around 20 MPG and 30 MPG, but still, a 20 MPG vehicle ends up paying 50% more than a 30 MPG vehicle for same distance. Here is a quick calculator:

Hand calculated, My Jeep 16.7. My Escape 26.6 The Jeep can do 20+mpg on the freeway. And the Escape 30+. With gas prices here around $3 gal I drive the Escape 80% of the time.

What kind of driving do you do with the Jeep? My new to me '01 with the 4.0 is showing around 17.5 on the trip computer with a pretty solid 50/50 mix. I haven't had a chance to hand calculate yet.

We just did a mini trip up to my dads place to go boating last weekend. First longer highway run in my 2020 Corolla SE (2.0). 254 miles, I believe the fill up was 5.02 gallons. I fill to the first click, usually at the same gas station. Not sure if there is an error somewhere else or if i really got 50mpg.

Only ran A/C on eco mode part of the way back. 65mph speed pretty much the whole way there and back. Filled up right before we left so it was all highway.

My current 02 jetta tdi is averaging 40.5 MPG, mostly city driving which is to be expected

The 01 accord 2.3L in my family averages around 23, love the car but garbage on fuel consumption

Recent mpg reports from road trips:

'17 Armada- 1250 mile trip. Hand calculated 4 tanks; 17.2, 22, 21.2, 22.2. Computer was within 0.5. Crushed the EPA rating of 19 hwy :)

'19 Ram V6 4x4- 400 mile trip. Hand calculated 24.4mpg. Computer said 26.2. Ambitious by 1.8!! This isn't the first time, the Ram computer is always ambitious by about 1-1.5mpg and twice it has been 1.8. Not pleased with that but I'm still ok with 24.4, the hwy rating on this is 23.

My 4-cylinder Tacoma averages 23.5 MPG (calculated over multiple years) and does not have a fuel economy calculator in the computer.
My Corvette averages 20 MPG (multiple years) and the fuel economy calculator is more optimistic at 22.

Last fill up in my '16 Versa with CVT was 395.1 miles on 7.099 gallons at 55.656 mpg actual hand calculation. This was on Walmart/Murphy 87octane E/10. The oil I use in the Versa is new/old stock Citgo Supergard 10w40 that's probably at least 15 years old. I don't trust the fuel computers they install in cars. The one in my Versa is always 4-6 mpg optimistic. This was not a typical tank as I was trying to see just what the car was capable of getting. Most of that was driving at about 40 mph on roads with light traffic, with about 10% small town driving and only about 15 minutes worth of a/c usage because it was raining one afternoon. I've had the Versa since Feb. 2019 my worst tank was the first one I ran through it at 42.345 mpg and my best was this one at 55.656 mpg. In 13932.9 miles tracked since I bought the Versa I've used 287.864 gallons for an overall average of 48.401 mpg. I'm an old man and drive like one. Most of my driving consists of rural 2 and 4 lane roads in the 40-55 mph range. EPA rating on the Versa is 31 city, 39 highway and 34 combined.

M235i- 26 mpg average, 32 mpg highway
Clubman- 36 mpg average, 42 mpg highway
Wrangler- 13 mpg average, 16 mpg highway
Club Sport- 27 mpg average, 31mpg highway
Note that the Club Sport has a close ratio gearbox- fifth gear is 1:1, meaning at 80 mph in top gear the motor is turning at 4000 rpm.

The old Mitsubishi Galant reaches a long time average of ~30mpg for the last 40k miles.

When cruising steadily at ~65 mph on long roadtrips, I've seen consumptions as low as 37mpg.
At ~75mph it's around 31mpg, at 85mph around 27.5mpg and at 100mph around 24,5mpg.

That is excellent for a 32 year old car.
