Hi,

I'm in the process of switching my '00 Ford Windstar over to synthetic. Actually, it's my mother's van and I want to extend the oci since I'm away at school for most of the year and I'm the one who's in charge of oil changes on the family cars.

Purely for piece of mind, I'm doing one run of Syntec Blend and I was curious about the actual percentage of synthetic used. I'm pretty sure from what I've read that the conventional component outweighs the synthetic, but I was wondering by how much?

Also, for anyone with experience with Ford's 3.8L engine, is there any oil you've found it likes/doesn't like? I've tried searching, but no info on this motor that I've come across.

Thanks.

I read somewhere a long time back that there was only about 10% synthetic oil in Syntec. But maybe that was PAO. Now that Group III is being used more and more it seems like in motor oils maybe there would be a higher percentage of Group III.

I kind of wonder if synthetic oils or semi-synthetic oils are really that important any more in warmer weather since Group III might be used a lot today. Except in cold weather when you need an oil that will flow easily in the cold conventional motor oil might be as good as synthetic oil today unless a vehicle requires a synthetic oil.

That's why I never purchase syn-blends. I wish there was a way for the oil bottlers to include a single synthetic number-percentage on the front label of their product.

Otherwise, I just don't trust them. I do not want to pay the same price for such a wide range of synthetic allowances the bottlers have. Charging me the same price in May for 10% synthetic - as they do in June for 28% synthetic is bad business - in my opinion.

Every bottler needs to take a percentage number & stick to it. Then they need to make that number public - by putting that percentage on their front label. If availability is their main issue for not doing it -- then just stockpile more base oil - or discontinue the syn-blend offering.

Ford doesn't inform its retailers who pump its Motorcraft Blends every day what proportion of what group oils make up its products, and they never will. Hyperbole is the special of the day, every day. However, Motorcraft 5W-20, as specified by the factory for your family's Windstar, will be well liked by your 3.8, especially up there where you can have some pretty cold temperatures during the school year.

As I've posted before, we have lots of high mileage vehicles using MC 5W-20, even here where it can be hot nine months of the year, with smooth running engines, completely absent any lubricant related problems. Ignition coils, on the other hand.......

I've read 10-15% depending on brand.
To me it a ripoff.
Do your your own blend if you want one.
Mix same company, same weight of dino and synthetic and get a higher percentage for about the same cost.
