I change the oil on both my '04 Silverado 5.3...as well on my Dad's '00 Sierra 5.3. Obviously, these are both basically the same engine. However, a different filter is specified here. Purolator recommends a PL25288 for the '00, and a PL14006 for the '04. The PL25288 filter is 4" long, the PL14006 is about 3 3/8" long. Thread is the same, diameter is the same, both have an ADBV.

However, AC Delco spec's the same filter for both applications, a PF46, which appears to be the equivalent of the smaller PL14006.

To keep things as simple as possible, I want to keep ONE filter on hand. It would seem to be the "no-brainer" to use the longer PL25288 on both vehicles.

Am I overlooking something here? Since AC spec's the same filter for both applications (even though they spec the *smaller* filter of the two), seems to me that the filters are interchangable.

Thanks.

GM went to the shorter filters so they could use the same filter on more vehicles. In this case the Corvette, Camaros, and Firebirds use the shorter filter for ground clearance. Instead of having a long filter for the trucks and a shorter for the cars GM figured it was easier to use just one size.

The original AC Delco filter for the 4.8, 5.3, and 6.0 was the PF59.

I've had excellent results with Supertech ST3675 on my 2k 4.8l and 2002 4.8l Chevy trucks.

The UOAs come back with low insol and I've cut open every filter and all look great.

Here is a few posts of the filters;

I've also cut open a PF59 and posted photos; PF 59 photos

Some info from AC Delco on why the change in filter numbers etc for your perusal..

Quote:

AC Delco introduces the next generation of Duraguard® oil filters. This advanced filter technology allows the filter to function better while being lighter and more easily recycled. The oil filter redesign will be a rolling change with no price impact. An improved nylon core provides more open area in the core, yielding more filtering area for improved flow in a smaller canister, while maintaining the same capacity as the larger canister. Increased efficiency, higher collapse strength, and higher burst strength are the result of a roll seam design. The redesigned concave base plate allows for the accommodation of the combination relief and anti-drain back valve, while incorporating a raised threaded flange. Four new filter sizes cover the redesigned part numbers.

Its hard to shake the old thinking that bigger is always better.

I like the Napa Gold 1522, PF-59 equivalent, for use on my 2001 Sierra 4X4 with the 5.3L engine. This filter is loaded with features & is good look'n with the black cannister & napa graphics.

A great source is Fleetfilter.com and use the Wix 51522 part number for ordering. Pricing is very good, at a quantity of 6 or more, it works out to $5 each including shipping.

In this case, bigger is certainly better & I want the larger size for the 6 quart system.

Sounds like AC-Delco might be sourcing the Champion Labs e-core design. Remember, AC-Delco doesn't *make* oil filters anymore, they are simply the parts marketing arm of GM. They buy their filters from various third parties and have 'em painted blue. Whether or not there are unique proprietary advantages to AC-Delco's version of these filters is open to question. I suspect not.

I have an '04 silverado 5.3 too. I have looked into the filters and here's the scoop. I have used pf46's until now but I am about to change to wix 51522 (napa 1522) - here's why. A pf46 is a wix 51042 (napa 1042), but wix has filter specs on their website. The 51522 is identical to a 51042 except the following: height is 4.526 not 3.404(taller), burst pressure is 290psi not 320 (who cares), and here's the big one - nominal micro rating is 15 not 19 (better - I think - right?). All other sizes are identical including threads.
