I'm looking for a device that I can use to effectively squeeze as much of the old oil out of a used oil filter. Typically I drill a few holes in the case & let it drain by itself over a couple of days. I've seen a few pneumatic or hydraulic models for sale, they are way out of my league. Looking for something cheap & easy.

What do the rest of you do with an old oil filter?

Cheers!

One of our techs had a really nice home workshop. He used a pair of air shocks and a home made metal frame to make a filter/can crusher. Push one button and filters were 3/4" high.

Doesn't Mississauga have a household hazerdous waste depot? Ours in London also accepts used oil filters where they deal with squeezing out the last drops.

I doubt crushing the filter does much more than drilling a hole and letting it drain. The law may require oil change places to crush them. It also eliminates holding them while they drain and saves space. Once drained, I recycle them with my tin cans, or at least what is left after cutting them open.

Buy two pieces of pipe, so the filter and one of the pipes fits into the larger pipe. Screw a metal cap on both ends of the small pipe. Put a flange on the large pipe on the end to stand it up with. Put the filter in followed by the smaller pipe, followed by a big hammer. It will crush the filter and empty it, too.
