We have a 16hp Briggs Inteck that burns oil. It has done this since it was new. It now has over 300 hours on it and still uses oil. Its not excessive but we have to add a few ounces after each mowing which takes about 1. 5 hours.

We have only used briggs and stratton brand oil (not sure who makes it) 30 weight oil and briggs filters.

This engine is 40 cubic inches so its huge for its hp. I dont have the model number handy but will get it for you all. Its as strong as it can be. I know Intecks have a bad reputation in general.

I am wondering if some other brand of oil may help the oil usage? I had a car once that used a quart of oil every 750 miles and it lived a long life. Its agravating to have a newer engine consume oil like this one does. I changed it out and after the first mowing it was pitch black. I think I may add some Kreen. What are your opiions?

The oil and filter has been changed once a season since new. That is about 50 or so hours but maybe more. It may be more like 60 hours butyou get the picture.

I had same engine in craftsman mower,it always used oil no matter what weight or kind,it finally blew up last summer, screws came out of throttle plate and got sucked into valves and piston no more oil burning at that point

They do burn oil at a rate of about 1oz per hour of full load.
Briggs would tell you to just top it off after each mow, and be sure you have no oil leaks. I have never owned one myself. If it were over 85f when you mow you could get away with a saehd40 single vis. But that may not slow it down by much any ways.

Does it oil foul plugs?

For a modern day, healthy OHV engine, I'd call a few ounces in 1.5hrs excessive. None of mine consume a noticeable amount over an entire season, however they are not Briggs engines.

OTOH, my old Kohler-K's would easily consume that much oil and then some.

Try one of the "high-mileage" oils ... and using a top oil in the gas like MMO or even some 2-cycle oil at 200+:1 will cut down on crankcase oil burning.

In my opinion its not normal. I have a 14 hp briggs vanguard and it does not use a drop of oil over 50 hours of use. This is a good strong running engine but it consumes oil. Spend the extra money and get a Vanguard. The dealer says this is not excessive but I disagree. They always tell you this when you have oil usage. We will just keep it filled up and run it till it blows.

Not the same engine, but the Briggs 675 flattie I have doesn't burn a drop of oil in its ~30 hour season, at 3 years old. I'd say it's unusual to be burning that much oil.

Im very happy with my 24 hp INTECK. I personaly believe theres alot to be said for maintence.
