some of y'all outside of Ohio probably don't know that the OH Legislature and Governor( all parties involved are in the same party) have been going back & forth the past month or so, about a Proposed Gas tax increase(17cents) from the Gov. in the proposed state budget. they passed finally passed a bill the other day, and they Gov. Signed today.
- the Last time OH raised the state gas tax was in 2005. these are the funds that repair our roads and bridges. our county engineer keeps saying that materials costs have tripled in that same time frame...

seems like what they passed is:
Effective July 1:
+10.5 Cents/ gal Gasoline
+19 cents/gal Diesel
New Tax at time of registration for Electric/Hybrid Vehicle owners: (there is some confusion on this provision most articles say it one way, and the bill i read said it differently)

(per the bill I read)
$200/yr for Plug-In Electric Vehicles (Full Electric and Plug-in Hybrids ie: Tesla, Leaf, Bolt, Volt, Fusion/Cmax Energi)
$100/yr For Hybrids (without plugs: (Prius, Camry, Fusion/Cmax Hybrid, etc))

(Per various news stories)
$200/yr for Full Electric
$100/yr Plug in Hybrid
non Plug-in Hybrid no extra Fee..

Effective July 1 2020:(2 year budget)
Front License plate no longer required.

sure glad i just bought a hybrid, and Just drilled holes in the front bumper for the plate Bracket...(previously owned in MI/IN states without front plates)

and Folks, let's try to keep politics out of the discussion as much a possible. we don't need a lock/delete..

I haven't gotten my memorandum Title yet, so i've not been able to transfer my registration over, but once it comes in, $40 for a full year reg( I don't Think they pro-rate for a partial year...). then in august on my birthday, due another $40 annual reg, plus new $100 tax cuz i bought a hybrid... WOO HOO!

I see nothing here that is controversial. Nobody wants to pay additional gas taxes, but if you want nice roads then that's the most logical way to fund them. The tax on the EVs makes sense because Teslas use the same roads as every other car and induce wear and tear in the same manner.

Glad you lost the front plate requirement!

in Wash st we have one of the highest gas taxes. never goes down , only up. when people use less gas they say they are not making enough gas tax so they need to raise it. when more gas is used they get more more money and never give it back. they always find a way to spend it.

Looks like they took a page out of California play book. More gas taxes for infrastructure. California played games for years with those gas taxes, moving them into general fund for leftist pet projects. They raised the taxes under the guise of necessity for road repair. Worse, the public voted to retain the increase. Ughh!

What's the gas tax cost per gallon now and when this becomes law? I think we pay close to 60 cents per gallon and the state's been talking about increasing the gas tax, flipping back and forth those who drive farther should pay more then trying a distance tax. Yet with all these increases the roads are in poor shape and the state just give the money to the homeless.

Waiting for the lock.

here in Pennsylvania we have some of the highest fuel taxes in the country,, yeah to fix roads , bridges ...yeah right . bet you cant drive 500 yards without several potholes. bridges falling apart and and what do you see? DOT workers sleeping in trucks or at restaurants for hours.. I've watched them dump at least a half a truck of patch materials in an empty lot , guess that was to much work for the day...makes you wonder where the money is going, sure isn't to fix roads

Pennsylvania is one of my LEAST favorites states to run into. Its fuel cost is higher than Canada's, and that's saying a lot. I do PA runs, but only if I can get in and out without buying fuel. And if I do need to buy fuel, I only buy enough to make it out of the state. And guess what; their roads are as bad as any other states where winters are cold. They must be spending the money elsewhere. My strategy is to fill up in Ohio before entering Pennsylvania, and now Ohio's higher gas tax messes that up. They even tax diesel higher just to twist the knife a little more. (Yeah, I know, diesel vehicles are generally big rigs, and they do more road damage than gasoline vehicles, but the added cost is passed on to consumers in the form of higher transport cost.)

And don't get me started about running the Turnpike...

people have demonstrated an inability to drive on slick roads, and road salt destroys roads. You got to pay somewhere.

The federal tax on gas/diesel has not changed since 1993. FE standards have reduced the amount fuel purchased per vehicle. Thousands of bridges are in need of repair. The individual states are just trying to make up for the lost revenue.

Are you sure it's the salt that destroys the roads? I thought it was the freeze-thaw cycle of water, and snowplows.
I can see salt corroding steel bridge components and maybe rebar in concrete roads (but only if it can leach through 4 inches of concrete).

Except public policy should encourage saving gas by rewarding those buying electric cars, not taxing them more. The electricity isn't free or without taxes and fees.

Salt-infused water will go through a freeze-thaw cycles just at lower temps. For example at 32 degrees the roads are salted, snow/ice melts and this salt infused melt water seeps into the asphalt/concrete. The front blows through and temps drop to 15 degrees or lower, which causes the salt infused water inside the concrete/asphalt to freeze.

Louisiana is considering the same for "road improvements". Back when they wanted the Casinos allowed in the state, that was one of the "selling points". They Tax more and still find ways to waste our money because our roads are bad!

Semis are harder on the roads than salt is, or even the climate. Salt is harder on vehicles...

I take it you don't do IFTA?

Or you are under the limits?

I like the fact they're getting rid of the front license plate requirement, but one could ask, what are they doing with all of the revenues they're currently collecting in taxes for the roads, and why isn't it enough?
