Odyssey H6 battery

Bought an Odyssey H6 AGM for my wife's Honda Pilot. I put it on a trickle charger yesterday to top it off. The charger was only on for a few hours before it said fully charged. This morning I tested the battery and it only tests to 610 CCA even though the manufacturer says its 760 CCA.

Is this battery going to have a short life? Should I take it back to Napa for a replacement?

The other Odyssey H6 AGM that I bought for another vehicle tests at over 850 CCA.

Odyssey Technical Support said the BA9 tester is not geared for testing pure lead AGM batteries even thought it has a setting for Flat Plate AGM batteries. They recommended using the battery and checking it after a few days to see if the CCA improves over time. Makes no sense to me.

Charging systems in vehicles has often been cited as being capable of maintaining a battery at 80%.
I believe this level is designed in to avoid cooking batteries.
In your case, 610/760 = 80%

If the Pilot's charging system is designed for AGM batteries, perhaps a week's driving will get you over the 80% wall?

Be nice when you go back to NAPA. If they like you, maybe they'll swap you another without fanfare and palm this one off to another customer.

What was the initial voltage of the battery off the shelf? How old is the battery?
Connect the battery to your Clore 20A charger and see what it does.

I don't remember initial voltage of the battery. Battery was manufactured in May 2024 according to the sticker.

I put on my Battery Tender 4.5amp on the AGM setting and it said fully charged after about 15-20 minutes.

Calling out Oscar Meyer bologna.
I made an immediate Ancel BA101 measurement on the purchase date of Dec 2023 and found out it was fully charged in Dec 2022 when it left the factory.

CCA ratings are not linear like that WRT state of charge.

Midtronics doesn't want users using their tester on new "normal" lead acid batteries because of the "false negative" of reading too high of a CCA. When I worked at a tire shop a supposed 600 CCA might read around 710. I abused this privilege to "prove" to a couple customers that they got a "really fresh" battery. 😁

That said IDK if the same thing crosses over to the AGM style, but I'd try for a different battery.

Midtronics, BTW, calls 60% of rated CCA fair and 50% "replace". Exide allowed the Midtronics tester for warranty claims.

How’d it ring out?

I’m wanting to think that the tester was not accurate? Resistance load testers are the most accurate ways to test.
Napa still has it on their Odyssey charger. I dropped it off at NAPA at 7am yesterday as of 5pm last night it was at 80% charged.

Something is wrong with the battery. I have three chargers: BatteryMinder 750ma, PulseTech XC400 4amp and a BatteryMinder 2012 4amp. From a healthy battery it should take only a few hours to get to 80% SOC. Assuming NAPA started 7AM that is 10hrs.

I agree that something is wrong with the battery. But they have to go through this procedure to file a warranty claim. Battery was never installed.

Yeah… 80% charge after 10 hours suggests it was 0 charge when it came in. If that’s not the case, something is off. A bad cell, perhaps.

@meep

I picked up the battery and is 100% fully charged but showing 80% state of health. Working with napaonline.com now about getting a replacement. If this is how warranty will be on this brand of battery, I will return them both and get a H6 AGM from Sams Club or Costco.

They sold you a 7 month old battery
A properly manufactured AGM will hold the soh and soc for 6 + months easily. My Odyssey AGM held it 12months after being fully charged without the connected maintenance 13.7V float voltage applied during storage. I did confirm this info and my observations with Odyssey customer service.
