The recommended OCI is 10K. I plan to keep this car for around 200K. I drive a lot of 5 mile trips. The car currently has 3,400 miles. Without running any analysis I was wondering what the experience of the oil gurus on here would recommend for my 1st OCI and to start going forward.

I plan to use the Toyota 0w20 synthethic and was thinking about a 5k OCI for the first change and then maybe 7,500 intervals instead of 10,000. I would appreciate any of your thoughts and recommendations.

What does you owners manual state for sever service. 5 mile trips will give you more fuel dilution which is harsh on the oils longevity. Perhaps the 10,000 OEM recommendation is for normal driving plan. If you could provide some info on what is considered severe driving, it would help with the recommendation.

If I were you I'd search the UOA section for Prius UOA's, but I'd suspect you'll find it's pretty easy on oil.

7500 mile OCI's are pretty conservative but they are easy to remember. If you want to do that I would recommend 3750, 7500, 15,000, 22,500... etc since that will be a lot easier to remember.

I will have a 10k UOA of Toyota 0w20 in about 2 weeks. You can use that to decide.

Be sure to also drain/fill the transaxle fluid every 30k. 3.5-4 qt of Toyota ATF-WS and the procedure is identical to servicing a differential.

...you're just guessing.

Stick with the OEM oil and the OEM drain intervals. Use the best quality fuel you can find (www.toptiergas.com helps). That's the safe bet.

@Topo:

OP is talking about his hybrid, not ordinary otto cycle gasoline IC engine.

So, whatever the manufacturer recommends RE: OCI intervals and oil type should best fit his needs.

Q.

OH thanks, should have looked more closely..Different bird there..LOL

I appreciate the responses. According to the owner's manual severe operating conditions would be repeated trips of 5 miles or less in temperatures under 32 degrees....which I will not be doing very often.

I think that I will do my first oil change now (4K)....take the free dealer change at 10K and then do it myself @ 17,500 and see what analysis shows and then decide if 7,500 or 10,000 OCI is more appropriate.

Don't all these new cars have oil monitors? Why not just follow it as the baseline.

If I remember correctly, toyota's (and lexus) doesn't do calculations but just ticks over at 5k miles.

Well, I changed it out at 4,200 miles and get a freebie from the dealer at 10k....I guess I will worry about OCI after that. Maybe I will pull a sample at 17,500 and run an analysis before deciding on the optimum OCI for my application. Pretty sure I could go with the 10K OCI recommended by Lexus but it only cost a few extra $$ to check it out.

My primary concern was the first oil change.....if there is no special ff then it certainly won't hurt to change it early. I considered just changing the filter but said what the heck.....
