I have just rebuilt a 1989 Toyota 22r engine . I would love to have some suggestions on what oil you guys would run. Truck is mainly a commuter, but I did put a little 268 cam in it for a little more HP. No excessive RPMs though. Just a quick little truck when you need it. I am 49 and have used most brands over the years but this is my first rebuild. Thanks a lot.

I'd use a zink additive with newer oil. Or a "Break in" oil. congrats on the 22r - they are tough as nails! Should be a great little truck with a 268 type cam. IIRC it's very important to use a good oil filter with anti-drainback valve on those engines or the timing chain will stretch early. Some folks swear by the oe Toyota filters on these...

More cam more zinc. Are you running stock valve springs? Got a link to your cam for us? T5 or T6 is a good brew.

Congratulations on your new rebuild! Great truck and great engine.

IMO...T5 Rotella, 10w30 or Rotella Triple Protection 10w30, or comparable Dino Diesel oils, as the break in oils should give you a jump start on protection and breaking in the engine.

Thanks for responding. I know I can search for this info but while we are here, what oils have more zinc? The place I bought the cam is called "ENGNBLDR.COM". My son has bought one for his 87 and I bought the complete timing set there. Forgive me I don't know how to put up a link. These are good people and I highly recommend them. Real experts with the 22r and a helpful attitude as well. I am currently using a Wix filter, I have read on this website they are very good . I am using stock springs. I had a pro (not me) rebuild this engine and he checked them and said they were good. I have de-smogged the engine and am running a Rochester 2 jet off of a 60's Chevy. Runs great like that. Everything new or rebuilt but the battery and radiator. 27.4 mpg combined. If I can find a 5- speed I will be pushing 30 mpg I hope.
