Please don't get political on this thread. I read a blurb from Motul , the French motor oil company regarding VW 508. Their interest in producing this oil was to " meet their commitments to CO2 reduction". Wow. I guess we can't blame CAFE any more.

Please explain how this thread cannot be political since you've mentioned CAFE, which is political legislation. You also mentioned CO2 reduction which is... well you know what that is.

Ok. It was a milestone. Good to know what Motul is advertising.
 
It's become rather obvious that thin oils are for economy. We clearly can manufacture engines that hold up wonderfully on incredibly thin oils. However, the big question is whether the manufacturer does so or not. Short of extensive testing and disassembly, only time will tell. The good news is that most designs today hold up for at least 200k miles with proper service.
