My farmer/horse trainer friend Colton bought a nice 2018 Ford F-150 4WD truck with 3.5 v-6. Only 39k on it. Bought from private owner here in PA. Guy said he used wix/Napa gold and Valvoline Synthetic. Oil had 4,113 miles on it. Put a Fram ultra filter on with some Valvoline advanced Syn or whatever it’s now called in 5w30 flavor.

I think it is now just called Valvoline Full Synthetic :):)
The name will probably be changed tomorrow, but I'll still run it with confidence.

Still shows as Valvoline Advanced on their website.

Is that an Ecoboost 3.5, Adam? That oil looks pretty black for ~4K miles, he may have to change it even more often if he short trips it. If not, I hope the new Transit's PFDI 3.5 in my sig doesn't look that bad-I'll never be able to convince the company to change it under 7500.

Hey, yea it’s 3.5 eco boost. He plans to use Valvoline Syn for 4-4500 OCI’s.

BW, you've been around long enough to know that what an oil "looks" like tells you nothing in a credible sense. Just because it's dark doesn't mean it's ripe for a change.

Dave-and I’m sure you know that black oil at a relatively low mileage often indicates fuel contamination on a newer GDI engine. We’ve had a couple of EB 3.5 F-150 engine failures that might have been prevented with the use of better synthetic, non bulk synblend oils changed without waiting until the OLM tripped. UOAs are unfortunately a necessary evil if pushing OCI on these-but I’m sure this is common knowledge (?).

Fuel dilution does not turn oil black. Fuel "thins" lube which would only serve to lighten the refractory effect, relative to the human ability to perceive "color". Soot turns oil black. Other insolubles (oxidation) turns oil dark as well.

But the viability of oil life has little to do with the color of oil. There are plenty of examples in diesel engines where 5 miles after the OCI, the oil is "black", but can easily go 9,995 more miles. If "black" were the litmus test of oil changes, then some engines couldn't get down the block without needing an oil change.
