Did anyone see the Motorweek on Saturday? The mechanic said you need to do more than a OC, and talked about a BG motor flush, is this truly recommended? I have seen motors go for over 200K with no motor flush. Curious on the experience with this...

they recommend it in VW engines prone to sludge they use a special hookup and filters to flush the engine but the oem uses it so idk.

The BG Quick Clean and Compression Restorer stuff probably works to an extent. It is probably a good idea to use them in engines that are prone to deposit buildup.

I think any chemical cleaning is going to have a very limited effect. If you really need to clean up an engine, you'll probably have to tear it down and clean it manually.

Is it recommended? Yes -- i.e. someone somewhere will recommend it.

Is it beneficial? Only in some extreme cases, and only to a limited extent.

Is it necessary? Heck no. You said it all right here:

Think about it: if oil changes were "not enough", either the oil companies or the auto companies would change something...

I saw it. I'm getting pretty sick of Pat pushing that BG stuff down our throats. Basically, iirc, he said your engine might not last 50,000 miles if you don't flush it!

He also implied that the two valve covers he showed (one horribly dirty and one wonderfully clean due to regular flushing) came from otherwise regularly maintained engines, but I see no reason to believe him.

It's gotten to the point where I wonder how much BG pays him and why Motorweek keeps him on.

Pat has insulted the audience, not only on this episode, but time after time. He assumes the viewer (which is normally a car buff for watching this show) knows nothing and the "professional" shop has to do most of the work. If he's not paid off by some companies, why doesn't he show how to check and replace ball joints, struts, brakes, a rusted gas tank, or do a valve lash adjustment? You don't need a shop or expensive tools for this. Forget the brand names, Pat, and show us the "how to's."

It's 100% hype. Who would sponsor a show whose premise is to do less extra services? It's COMPLETE bunk when you think about the CLEAN under valve cover pics we've seen here. Our CRV was spotless at 150k, was barely worth taking a pic.

People who believe these TV morons are the same ones whose eyes glaze over when I give them basic engine oil info...I don't get their trust nor attention because I don't wear a shop shirt with a brand name on it. The whole thing makes me sick.

Me too. I used to enjoy him like 10 years+ ago. He used to be very informative, now he's like an infomercial. He needs to go.

Unless someone didn't change their oil frequently enough, or ran dino oil in a turbo car, I just can't see how this is needed.

Definitely true. I do remember over a decade or so ago, Goss' Garage USED to be instructive and informative, now it definitely seems like he is pushing product and mechanics.

I never really cared for Motorweek, but over the past decade the program has become a joke. John Davis and crew never have a critical word for almost ANY vehicle they test, and the amount of worthless fluff, like that stupid accessories segment border on comical, EXCEPT that MW is not supposed to be a comedy!

I think MW time has come and gone. Bye bye John Davis & company.

I just skim through Motorweek shows now (thank you PVR), and skip the boring sections.

Two of my favourite TV car shows are in order

1. Motoring 2009 (soon to be 2010, 2011 etc. - first year was Motoring 1988) www.motoringtv.com

2. Driving Television www.drivingtelevision.tv

Don't know if you can get them where you are though, as they're Canadian shows. You can watch episodes on line if you want.

Thank you for the heads up rcy!

It is odd that considering how the USA is one of the biggest car markets in the world that we have a complete lack of really outstanding television programs that focus on new cars. Heck there even any "good" ones as far as I know, at least on the main stream TV outlets.

Forget SPEED channel, as so many of the new car and truck test programs are actually nothing more than stealth paid advertisements for various manufactures. I had to snicker when I watched the "6 vs 8" program that was actually a paid ad from Ford for the Lincoln MKZ. After the credits in TINY print it stated that Ford paid for the program. Can you believe it?!?!

It is more of an entertainment show that happens to center around cars than it is a car show.

Top Gear is one of the few car shows I can watch on TV. i used to love watching all the car shows on Spike, now i cant stand the half hour infomercials. the best are the "budget" builds where they have an entire fab shop to make their parts for them.

Top Gear is entertainment first that is for sure, but the cinematography, camera angles and production values on the show
are top notch. The three co-hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, Rodger Hammond and James May do not take themselves to seriously. However, as an American, you got to listen to the light jabs they do take towards us "Yanks" now and then.

I have watched Top Gear, it is pretty enjoyable, while they don't review many models anymore that the average joe can afford at least they have the balls to make negative observations about a car when it is deserved, unlike any US show.

I really used to LOVE "MotorVision". It was a German tv program where the star of the show was always.....the cars...go figure. They never had on camera personalities thank god, just well done detailed reviews of cars that ordinary people could actually afford to buy. The neat thing was that they had tests of all kinds of goodies that we couldn't get here like Renault Clio williams cup, Peugeot 205 GTI, VW Lupo GTI, Opel Corsa, Astra, Ford Fiesta, ect. All that and amazing videography of cars roaring around a test track..just OUTSTANDING!!!!
