I have a 2005 Buick Century that is used for short trips to school , work , errands , etc. with average length of trip 6 to 10 miles , 90% suburban driving and approx. 12K miles a year usage (rarely gets out on the highway ). I am looking to only change the oil on this car once every six months / 7,500 miles . Will Mobil 1 EP 5W 30 buy me any added protection over Mobil 1 5W 30 for the above car & driving conditions ?

I think an oil with a higher tBN reserve would help, yes.
I spend the few extra couple bucks for the M1EP most of the time for my Altima. This time I didn't, I really don't think it matters to a great degree.
I'd say just the standard. I run Mobil 1 5w30 in my wife's Jag and I'm planning on 1 yr OCIs backed up by UOAs to be safe. Not really a short tripper, but the majority of trips that aren't family outings are around 10 miles and it sees around 7k miles a year
Why use synth if you are changing 6mo/6k? Go PYB or any other dino...
I use the EP, watch the sales, the price difference isn't much.

Got 96K miles on the Buick Century. Other key points : Two sons that drive it are not much for a proper warm up - they tend to just get in and go (much to my preaching otherwise) . Lastly, I hate to change the oil on this Buick : Even on ramps there is not much space underneith and GM could not have put the filter in a worse place - rear of the engine , way up high where you have to replace / install the filter by feel alone (I use either M1 , Purolator 1 or Bosch Distance Plus filters) . So to conclude : Start up protection and longest OCI interval I can safely get away is the goal between either M1 or using M1 EP .
unless you can get EP for the same or less than regular m1, i would go with m1.
