So my my 18 Mazda6 touring Will hit 60,000 miles this week. Bought it CPO with 2700 miles as a dealer demo. Has had full synthetic oil changes every 5K and cabin and air filter changed at 30 K. So now that I’m at 60 K I’m gonna change the oil again and cabin and air filter along with the transmission fluid. The mazda fluid is like 12 bucks a quart is that really the only option for ZF fluid?

Only planning on keeping this car until I can get delivery of my maverick. I’m gonna place the order in August when ordering opens back up since I get D-plan for working at Ford.

If you’re not keeping it much longer why bother?

I’ve done mine 2x (I’m at 60k now) but used Mazda zf each time. Cheap insurance. I’ve experienced trans shift quality issues with wrong fluids in too many cars so I only use the right fluid now.

With the way things are it’ll probably be a year and a half before I even get my maverick. That’s another 30,000 miles probably.

How did you do your service just a drain it fill? I plan on doing a drain when it’s cold and filling it up cold and calling it good.

Mazda's ATF is FZ fluid, not zf.

Drain-and-fill works just fine on the SkyActive Drive A/Ts. You must monitor ATF temp in order to set fluid level properly.

I used Mazda's fluid. I considered alternatives, but couldn't find anyone who gave me good confidence in their fluid for this app, and my Mazda dealer sells parts at competitive prices

You can get 4L bottles of Ravenol FZ on Amazon or Blauparts. When you factor in shipping its probably not much cheaper than getting it from a local Mazda dealer.

Yes just drained and filled. The fill port is a dipstick but it’s bolted to the case. Drained, filled, ran through gears and checked level, topped off.

^^^This is all I have ever done on any automatic transmission from all makes/models including 2 different CVTs from Honda & Nissan. I know that there are new procedures for changing ATFs on today’s vehicles by using scanners for checking the transmission temp. However there are many successful DIYers doing drain & refill procedures at home without any special tools or equipment. I too have been successful.

I performed an ATF change on my 2014 CX5 at 30k miles with Mazda FZ fluid. I drained and filled the ATF after driving the vehicle and getting the engine up to operating temperature. Checked the ATF fluid level after going through each gear. Car has 58k miles now. I'll drain and fill the ATF at 60k again.
