Hi all,

Need to perform an oil change in my 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan w/3.8L V-6. I've traditionally used OEM filters (cartridge-type) from the local dealer, but have discovered that Mahle most likely makes Hyundai's OEM brand. Are the Mahle aftermarket branded filters any good? I plan on sticking with the 7,500 OCI using M1 EP 5w30.

Thanks!

Mahle is a huge OEM filter supplier (predominantly on European marques). I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Mahle makes some nice filters, check out Mann too. It case of Fiat, Mann looks the best compared to other 4 cartridge filters.

It only takes a few minutes research to confirm that the filter manufacturer for the subject Hyundai engine is about as controversial as any subject can be re: who makes the filter and in what country of origin??? There is a variety of OEM (??????) filters available from several manufacturers in more than one country. And, the filters differ in several features and perhaps quality & price.

Mahle, Mann, Hengst ... cartridge oil filters are all good, they are big German filter companies supply to German car companies. Their other filters (air, cabin, fuel ...) are very high quality too.

Excellent German filter. Only thing is, I think Hyundai engines are a bit on the picky side as far as oil filters go. Might want to consider the Mobis filter for that very reason.

I have some experience with filters for the 3.8L Genesis. I can say from personal experience that the OEM Mahle is nothing exceptional imo. And, it also costs more than the original 3C250 Hyundai 3.8L filter as the links below shows.

I can't speak to the Mahle aftermarket for the 3.8L, but depending on price if it's the same as the Mahle made oem I wouldn't chase it. I've found the Napa Gold/(Wix) 7250 to be an excellent aftermarket filter for the 3.8L at a good/value price. Check out the links with pics and decide for yourself.

Hyundai OEM cartridges: Mahle vs Hyundai.

Napa Gold 7250 ~5k oci.

+1

Here's some pics for comparison of the OEM's and Napa Gold.
Mahle made oem with felt endcaps on left, 3C250 oem and the Napa Gold/Wix below. The NG is virtually identical to the OEM 3C250

wonder if there is a Napa gold filter for my e34 BMW? BTW, fram filter for my BMW "looks" ok. Puralator looked like junk. I refused to use it.

I use Mann and Mahle for my Audi. The Mahle is the heaviest freakin' oil filter I've ever held in my hand.

Thanks all for the input.

Any idea why the OEM cartridge filters are cardboard, and not plastic with an o-ring like the Napa?

i've read and heard multiple times about "use oem hyundai filters and fluids." its [censored]. absolute [censored].

The Mahle made OEM doesn't really use fiber endcap, it's more of a felt like material, but it is well glued and tight. The nylon endcap used on the original Hyundai 3C250 was used/sold before the Mahle. I've used both and have no issue construction-wise with either. But I'm not paying ~2x the NG price for the oem Mahle, when the NG 7250 is so similar to the original oem and a well made filter in my experience. Plus the NG's frequently go on sale below the $6.50 everyday price. I got several for < $4 each.

It's actually not [censored]. At least the filter part isn't. Generally, the problem is with the spin on filters, though, not the cartridge models like the OP uses.

Now, most of the time using an aftermarket oil filter won't cause any problems, but there are a decent number of posts around the internet where people got knocks with aftermarket filters. It's just something Hyundai owners need to be aware of. If you get a knock, try an OE filter and see if it goes away.

Hyundai issued a TSB not once, but TWICE over some vehicles getting knocking sounds with an aftermarket filter.

My Hyundai got a bad knock with a Champ Labs made STP filter. I put on an OE filter and it went away. That was 45k miles ago.

In fact, here's a recording of the sound it made:

And here are the two TSBs:

As it is a cartridge filter the OP is using and referring to, the now too often posted spin on Hyundai filter tsb is irrelevant here imo.

Based on my experience I can say the NG 7250 works every bit as well as either the Mahle or the original 3C250. And as for the NG 7250 quality, the pics speak for themselves.

OT Also I've read on vehicle specific Hyundai forums where some Hyundai stealer's service personnel are (over)using the spin on tsb to blame a multitude of clearly unrelated issues. I believe that tsb has become a fall back excuse for some Hyundai stealers.

And also clearly, there are many 'quality' aftermarket spin on oil filters that will work as well or better than the oem on H/K vehicles. To me there's lot of H/K cya in the tsb. With common sense though it's easily solved. If one gets a startup rattle or noise, use a different filter.

You often come off as rude on this forum, especially when anyone talks about Hyundai filters. But I don't believe it is posted too often. A member in this thread clearly seemed ignorant that it is a real issue, so I do think posting it was relevant. I was simply pointing out that he wasn't correct and it is a real issue.

As I mentioned before, it's rare and the OP shouldn't be concerned about using an aftermarket filter, just be aware that if you should ever get a knock (which is unlikely), try an OE filter. Pointing out the TSB and explaining to people that it's rare to get a knock and that they simply should be aware of it will likely do more to quell the rumors than simply ignoring comments about it.

And, here's a thread on a Hyundai forum where a member did have a knock with a cartridge filter:
http://www.hyundai-forums.com/181-nf-200...e-knocking.html

As I mentioned, I don't think the OP should worry about using an aftermarket filter.

You are entitiled to your opinion regarding Hyundai filters and the tsb as I am to mine. My take happens to be somewhat different than yours, and I did note that it was my opinion in the post.

If that comes off as rude in your opinion, which is your's but unlike my post is not stated, then that's your take. I suspect it's more because I happen to disagree somewhat than some personal perception you have expressed.

Also, nowhere did I quote you nor re: your display name in my post, very polite and pc imo. So with that said, if you don't wish to read my posts for whatever reason, opinion or perception you have, there is an 'ignore' feature on the forum of which you can avail yourself for my posts.
