I read on this site that when you change your oil, the fresh oil detergents competes/cleans off some of the AW additives that the previous oil left behind.

Would using an oil that was not "Extended or Annual" for a short OCI such as 5.000miles be better for the typical auto engine wear as long as the TBN and TAN were ok at time of oil change?

Do "Extended or Annual" oils even have more detergents?

Just a thought. What do you say?

I doubt you could find a measurable difference. The extended life oils often have more antioxidants and better base oils to prolong life.

It's not the kind of issue I lose sleep over, the reduction in tribofilms is temporary and I'd say you could change the oil in your engine daily for a year and the only damage would be to your wallet

From an entirely practical standpoint, this would be a true statement.

Generally, a lot of opinion on this subject really boils down to:

"most people still change their oil too often" -

- at least the ones who obsess over maintenance (like we do)

The vast majority of American's change thier oil too often. It is the ones who change bulk oil every 30K or more who get the attention. I have been told by more than one tech Camry owners are a group of owners who have stated to service advisors their car does not need a oil change its a Toyota.

My oil pan holds 6 quarts and my bypass filtration system holds 4 quarts.

When I change oil, I only change the sump capacity - not the whole system - So I always have a little used oil still circulating.

I believe that if all else is equal, the oil with less detergents and dispersants will have better wear protection if the OCI is not too long. All else is rarely equal though.

Long drain oils likely have more dispersants, which are ashless but often not more detergents because they contribute toward sulfated ash, for which their are limits according to oil specs. met.
