I have a 2007 KIA Amanti with a 3.8 l engine.Kia says i have to use there oil filter. If i use a after market filter the warrenty on the engine may be voided if there`s engine problems .What makes the KIa filter better then any others?

Kia said it, or the dealer?

It is sold by the dealer.

I have heard stories of Hyundai/Kia denying engine warranty claims if there is a non-OEM filter in use. That's why I'm using Hyundai filters on my wife's Sonata.

Here's a Kia bulletin regarding oil filters. >>>>>

During engine research & development, the mechanical engine lubrication system is designed to operate at specific volumes and pressures to keep the reciprocating & rotary components properly lubricated. Kia has assigned specific guidelines for the use of oil filters (Cartridge / Spin-on) and oil viscosity to conform to; filtration, leak down, oil flow rate and pressure variations, to keep the lubrication system at optimal performance.

The use of aftermarket oil filters/ o-rings / improper oil viscosities could result in less then optimal filtration, leak down, oil flow rate and pressure variations due to different oil filter designs and construction. Some of the symptoms and concerns that may arise with aftermarket filters / wrong oil viscosities include:

* Valve train Noise
* Engine Knocking Noise
* Cold Start Engine Noise (2-7 seconds duration)
* Idle / Cruise Engine Noise
* Whistle Noises

Kia recommends the use of Kia genuine parts that are designed to operate at the specifications set forth during engine lubrication design and testing. If the engine oil has been changed recently and a noise condition has developed, perform an inspection of the oil filter and or Customer oil change maintenance records to help you in determining if an aftermarket filter or the wrong oil viscosity was used. If the vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket oil filter, perform an oil change and filter with the correct oil grade / viscosity and a replacement genuine Kia oil filter at the customer’s expense.

Isn't there legal precedence against that in the States? Magnusson-Moss or something.

Be smart. Use the recommended filter and oil and let the dealer change the oil during the warranty period. If there's a problem,it's their problem...not yours.

The problem though is thats a pretty long time to wait out the warranty. Its not like a Chevy where 3 years go by quickly and you can do whatever.

Most boxs of Name brand filters say "will not void manufactures warranty". I wouldnt sweat it, recommends is the key word, Ford says the same thing and ads the part of start up noise can be reduced by the use of Motorcraft filters. I dont know what a KIA filter looks like, but I remember the Mopar filters of the 90's were these cheasy little filters that I wouldnt have wanted to put on my car. Its just the dealer trying to market parts.

I would give the Filter Council a call and explain what you have been told, the phone number is at the bottom of the link. If Kia's TSB holds up, it will set a bad precedence for the aftermarket filter industry.

What's next, Kia next TSB requiring that OC's are done at dealerships to ensure that "the correct oil grade / viscosity and a replacement genuine Kia oil filter" is followed? What I see is Kia's self interest to create customer paid work for their service departments since Kia's warranty work for the 10 year period probably reimburse dealerships pennies for the work done. This smells like an HMO model.

Squishy hit the proverbial nail on the head, the Magnusson/Moss act prevents manufacturers from demanding you use their parts, UNLESS they provide them free of charge.

I've been to Tomah Wis. too. Many times in fact for the national tractor pulls.

Do you mean your Kia dealer says you MUST use Kia filters?

Please clarify your comment.

One, you don't have to use Kia oil filters. Two, the filters are decently constructed and around the $4-5 range. Three, don't use a Fram on a Kia/Hyundai, as the TSB was originally targeted at Fram filters, which did not have a filter that worked well with Hyundai Beta I4 engines. They must have generalized the TSB to all the cars they sell.

Use a good-quality aftermarket filter (no Fram!!!) with confidence.

Been to Tomah, lived in Sparta, "camped out" at Fort McCoy. In Soldier ytime accounting, the four months I spent in the area counts as about ten years.
