Thanks to posts here I'm now saving money by buying super tech full synthetic oil, and I end up using 0W20 a lot, so I just bought 6x 5qt bottles from Walmart. The price is good, but with how much I'm now going through is it possible to save by buying in 5 gallon buckets from somewhere? I looked and couldn't find better than Walmart $18 per 5qt.

Costco's kirkland oil when its on sale.
Actually right now it looks like it's a dollar less of 2 supertech vs the 2 Kirkland. But then id need a Costco membership. To bad Samsclub doesn't stick their name on oil.

Walmart has the 12 qt box might be cheaper
The super tech one has been unavailable for a year or more. the price displayed on the out of stock listing is more than just buying a 5qt. and a 5qt is much more useful as most cars need more than 4qt.

OP: How much are you going through?
Are congrats appropriate for finding this new hobby or, possibly, business?

Just be aware that several members here have noted real difficulties with extracting the oil from 5 gallon pails.
The bottom line including added steps, the need for larger funnels, spillage and storage of partially used pails.
The additional time needed to accommodate these considerations makes pails a NOGO for many, even if they are less expensive per unit of volume.

And, of course, other members can manage these additional tasks easily.

Just alerting you.

I got the ST 12 qt bag boxes on clearance for $32 and they haven't been back in stock, even though they still technically exist on the website. They're no fun to use, I have to pour them into an intermediate pitcher, and manipulate the spout while it's pouring while simultaneously handling the pitcher that's getting increasingly heavy.

You can get a Costco membership then "return" it "unsatisfied" if you want to try the store out for the day. Their oil goes on sale twice a year.

Or watch the clearance sales here, I've kept my Prii in 0w20 quite well at around $2-2.50/qt. Latest was a Valvoline blowout last summer.

I have 6 oil changes right now to be done and I'll have more this year, I'm not looking to buy 30 gallons I just figured maybe I can save buying larger than 5qt. It seems like I need to stick to supertech, and Kirkland if they go on sale or if I get a membership to remove the 5% non member surcharge.

I did that before online and then saw everything cost more than Samsclub so I cancelled it. The store isn't close enough for me to to into, I'll only buy online and most stuff cost more than Samsclub, so the savings likely won't be offset enough to get it mainly for the oil.

After I burn through my stock, I'm switching to Kirkland. It's $18/ 5 quarts, currently. While I realize there is better oil available, for my use case, with short change intervals due to city driving, "better" oil is a waste of money.

Quaker state ultimate is a good oil at the best price at Walmart , I do not understand why people spend a lot of money on your vehicles and try to save only just a few dollars on oil while you buy coffee for $ 5 dollars ,go out to eat at crazy prices etc ,,buy a good/better oil like a reputable name brand like , Pennzoil, Mobil 1, Valvoline EP, Castrol etc, or other excellent boutique oils like Hpl ,Amsoil etc. and sleep well over your decision, taking care of your engine starts with a better oil and OCI & filter . some oils meet and some exceeds the current SP, GF-6A specs, and look for proper licenses and study the specifications, lab tests etc.

Costco has the Kirkland oil at $30 for 2 5 quart jugs when its on sale. Right now not on sale.

I did a VOA and a UOA on the oil a while back. You can also find others who did the same. It seems OK for its intended purpose. I use it all the time. All the Kirkland branded oil is Dexos1Gen3.

If you go to www.valvolineglobal.com you can bring the cost of Valvoline Advanced to $14.55 for 5 quarts. However you need to buy 4 20quart bay boxes and spend $291.57. In addition to the cost you need storage space for the boxes and a way to get the oil from the box to the engine.

Ive been a buyer of garage boxes in the past and its not difficult to figure out but enough work where you want to throw the extra dollar at it for real 5 quart jugs versus large boxes.

The formulation of Valvoline Advanced I would say is overall better than Warren or Quaker State. Lots of moly and a good ad package. If you asked me whats better Kirkland, Quaker State or Valvoline Advanced 5W30 fuĺl synth I would immediately say Valvoline in my opinion.

If you go down this route than know you need space for the boxes, a 6 or 8 quart oil pitcher can be found on Amazon and a way to control drips/leakage of the oil. Its enough work for me to say lets stick with Kirkland 5 quart jugs.
