This has perplexed me for sometime. I take care of my parents yard. Im using a Simplicity Broadmoor and it has a 16hp Briggs intek. I dont know the model number right off my head but its a wopping 40 CI engine. I will try to go down later to prove this.

This engine has used oil since day one and does not smoke. Each mowing takes about an hour and a half. It does not leak a drop. I know these engines do not have a good reputation. The only oil this engine has seen is briggs and stratton brand with a change each season. I dont know who makes this straight 30wt oil.

I will add we have run the [censored] out of it and shown no mercy. Its strong as all get out but I dont know where the oil has gone. Maybe we just got a bad one.

Briggs will tell you it's normal for that engine to use up to an oz of oil per hour IF it's under a full load even if it's new. I've herd it talked about in many b and s update and tech classes. Keep it topped off, and check it before each use.

I've got a 305cc Kool Bore B&S Snow engine on my Simplicity snow blower that likes to eat Mobil 1 5W30 at a rate of about 1/2 - 1 oz. per hour under heavy load. It also fouled the spark plug something awful. I switched over to Castrol 5W30 high mileage conventional to see how the engine would use that. The machine was pretty much on "light duty" all winter due to most snow removal being done by my SS machines. Last Sunday we received a good then inches of slush that was taxing the single stage machines, so I pulled out the Simplicity to finish the job. I run it pretty hard for a solid hour. That was it's first hard workout with the Castrol oil in it. I just went out and checked the oil level and spark plug. Oil seems to be down about the same as it would have been with the M1 and the plug was also showing some fouling.

As with the OP's engine, this thing is very strong, has excellent compression and runs like a clock.

I have had two previous ten H.P. 318cc Tecumseh L-head engines on snow blowers for a total of 20 years. Neither one of them used a drop of oil.

I don't have any other four stroke engines that consume oil. Some are fairly old and well used but don't eat oil.

Must be the nature of the beast.

As per 660's recommendation, keep an eye on the oil level.

You are correct. We keep it topped off but it sucks.

Thank you for your experience. I have a 14hp vanguard with zero help. BEst engine I have ever had.

actually any engine maufafurer that i know of states consumption is normal and not warrantied, id try steping up viscosity, and stay AWAY from syn
