Read thru a lot of interesting stuff on bypass filtration, here and elsewhere. I don't know that it's always a cost justifiable addition, though sometimes it seems to be.

I want to build a bypass system for an IHC 826 tractor D358 DI Neuss 6-cyl.). The reason why is that I cannot find even a moderately efficient full-flow filter for that application, so want to supplement the best one I can find with a bypass. If I do this on a budget, I think I can make it pay down the road... err... the field! And... I just happen to have a hydraulic filter base laying around and much of the hardware I'd need. I have crunched the numbers and the potential increase in the OCI will more than pay for the upgrade, I think. My intention is to go to a 3-year, 150 hour OCI, subect to the results of a two year 100 hour UOA this fall. I'm most worried about soot, perhaps needlessly, because it's a high time engine (8300 hours). In the end, it's probably as much an experiment as anything. Anyway, I have some questions:

1) Can an ordinary hydraulic filter be used in this way? I'd find one with the best micron rating. At the reduced flow of an engine oil system, compared to the high flow rating in a hyd system, it should even step up a little in efficiency.

2) Is the micron rating the only criteria for filtering soot? Are there other filter or filter media characteristics that make one product better at filtering soot than another?

3) Will the restriction of a fine filter and 3/8" hose/tubing be enough to prevent excessive oil pressure loss? Or do I need to restrict flow in some way? I'll install a mechanical gauge as a check in any case.

4) All comments appreciated!

I would keep the restriction to a wire-size drill...I believe I used a #57 (0.0402")?? On my Cummins, this produces around 1 quart/minute at hot idle (25 psi). They are fairly easy to build, you can easily make an inline restrictor/orifice out of a 3/8" male barb/male NTP, 3/8" male barb/female NPT, and a 1/4" pipe plug. Simply drill the pipe plug to the appropriate orifice, tape the inside male NPT fitting for the 1/4" NPT pipe plug, install the pipe plug and then screw the female NPT fitting onto the male fitting (enclosing the pipe plug between the two barb fittings). This is very similar to what I did to my Gulf Coast, except the female 3/8" NPT was part of the housing.

I considered using a hydraulic filter at one point, and they should work fine. Just make sure they don't have an internal bypass built in (most don't), or it will be a waste of time. I may actually go that route myself as this GCF is becoming cumbersome to change. They should handle the heat just fine...hydraulic systems run just as hot as engine oil in some applications.

I should also point out that 3/8" line is overkill...I have 1/4" line on my setup, and it flows more than enough volume. In fact I have almost 25 feet of it in my application, andd that long of run doesn't affect volume (remember the orifice size)...

Well, yes. I don't think it will pay in terms of longevity at the level of filtration that you desire.

AFAIK ..as small as 2um

You will need further restriction. A 3/8 line can move a whole lot of oil at even moderate pressures.

Your hydraulic mount may have an integrated bypass valve it. This would not be suitable for a bypass filter installation unless the outlet restriction (or inlet, for that matter) attenuated the flow to either nearly equalize the pressure across the media ..or make the flow inconsequential even if that threshold was reached.

I guess if you could assure that it's down to a trickle

Here's about the finest I found in WIX in the 1-12 thread. Most do not x'ref to WIX.

Part Number: 51259
UPC Number: 765809512597
Principal Application: Dresser, Jacobsen, John Deere, New Holland, Steiger (Hyd. or Trans)
All Applications
Style: Spin-On Transmission Filter
Service: Transmission
Type: Full Flow
Media: Paper
Height: 5.500
Outer Diameter Top: 3.670
Outer Diameter Bottom: Closed
Thread Size: 1-12
By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI: None
Beta Ratio: 2/20=6/19
Burst Pressure-PSI: 420
Max Flow Rate: 12-16 GPM
Nominal Micron Rating: 10

Gasket Diameters
Number O.D. I.D. Thk.
Attached 2.834 2.462 0.275

I don't know how long it will last under those conditions.

Here's everything Donaldson has in the 1-12 thread. The finer filtration numbers are in their SYNTEQ line. They would be prohibitively expensive for your frequency of service ..as I suspect hydraulic filters will be over some other type of filter - long term.

In your situation ..I think a tp filter would work well ..as would a home grown cotton wound filter. That's if you want to stay generic. You're looking @ about $150 in initial costs, but the media is cheap for what you get out of it.

Yeah, I wonder how he gets that filter info so fast. He must have the Wix CD permanently installed.

The long list was easy. I just went here and punched in all the instances of 1-12 thread. There are many (as you'll note in the various offerings 1-12 1 - 12, 1-12XYZ2b ..etc..etc. You get 5 criteria in the attribute search .. and that long list gets puked out. Now the x'ref'ing to WIX ..that's a pains taking process ..but Wix doesn't have any real fine offerings in hydraulic filters in the 1-12 thread. They do appear to have some in the upper end industrial realm ..but Donaldson still appears to (in my experience/exposure) reign supreme here.

Bump for an old thread but all the other I found regarding a screw on non Amsoil bypass have all need referencing the B164 type filters. But those are rated at 2/75 = 2/15. Not bad for the price but imho not enough to justify the setup.

So I've been too toying with the idea of using a hydraulic filter for bypass.

- P561136 Filter Base. 1-12" threads no bypass.
- P564967 Filter. 5 micron at Beta 1000.
- Restrictor ~0.032" or so.

This will be installed on my 2003 VW TDI.

Thoughts or suggestions?

I have considered doing what you describe.

The Donaldson filters you mentioned have a maximum operating temperature of 225 F. Oil temperatures can get hotter than this. That was the deal breaker for me. If your engine has an oil cooler and the maximum oil temperatures never exceed 225 F, then it would likely work fine.

A more proven option would be the Amsoil EaBP bypass filters. They are made by Donaldson and have a 2 micron at 98.7% rating. These are designed and tested for internal combustion engine use.

I'm putting together a homemade bypass using similar filters... I have larger engines and I want bigger filters, so I'm using the P564357 rated at 6 micron beta 1000.

Since your looking for a small filter another option is getting a permacool 12116 filter base and running the p551257 oil filter that's rated to 5 micron / 99%.

Its worth noting that all my engines I'm doing this to DO have oil coolers That keep oil temps just about equal to coolant temps... 190-200F
