I'm thinking of running a 5w-40 HDEO in my 2000 Ford excursion with the 6.8 V10 it has 150000 hardmiles on it and currently consumes about a quart every 600-1000 mile of M1 10w30. I know this might be a little thick but I'm hopeing it might help clean and slow consumption a little. I know the the vavoline is sm rated. What are your thoughts.

That's surprising! I figured the updated tube would help it. That's some pretty high consumption. My 5.4L typically goes through nothing between OCI's.......

I don't know if it will help but you can certainly try it. I ran Delvac 1 5w-40 in mine for a while.

A qt every 1k miles in the modulars, especially the v10's aren't unusual if they've been best and and even slightly skimped on maintenance. Just they're normal thing..

If you got it from the dealer you've got the updated part (not sure if it applies to the 6.8L or only the 4.6/5.4L). Essentially they changed it slightly to stop oil consumption that was happening with the original design.

No. It originally spec'd 5w30 anyway. As I said, I ran D1 5w-40 in mine (even in a Canadian winter!!) without issue.

No problem. I can only imagine the number of fleets of Ford modular engine that have only been serviced with 15W40 in their life time.

In a 2000 V10 I can not imagine any problems of using a 5W40 that would cause engine failure but I would try a HM oil or try to solve the mechanical causing consumption. But the best of luck to you.

5w30 Pennzoil hm
As for the ford modulars those early years it could be the valvr guides...Those engines are known to consume some oil in the early ones but they will run a long long time.

Around 2001 the consumption problem was fixed.do not use anything heavier than 5w30

At work we have a van that me and 4 other guys drive on 12 hour shifts. It has the 5.4 I think. It only gets about 4000 miles a year but runs half the time. In the winter time it can go weeks without getting shut off. It never leaves the plant or gets much over 20mph. The company only has the oil changed one a year. It leaves a cloud of blue smoke everywhere you go and uses oil once the oil gets old enough. I top it up with Delvac 5w40 since that is all that the plant keeps for motor oil. I have wished the thing would blow up since we got it 5 years ago because it was junk then. It has had multiple times where I have had to add 4-5 quarts of oil to get it filled up again. It just wont die.

It was earlier than '01, it was before the PI heads happened, so it would have been around 1996 IIRC.

there were problems up until 2000 with the valve guides mostly caused by (Some believe heavy oils)
We did many of them, the thinner oils lubed the valve guides the heavier oil could not get to them fast enough.
This is the belief in the engine rebuilding circle and brought up a couple of times at fmco seminars for certifications. Also the newer valve seals are made slightly different.

I'm basing it on Ford's official revamping of the valve guides/seals in the mid 90's, as they pre-revamp ones were very much guaranteed to burn oil no matter what you ran in them after they hit a certain age.

The Modulars after that time period (we've owned several) I sure COULD end up with dried out seals or damaged guides, but it wasn't the guaranteed issue that it was with the early engines. I've seen several extremely high mileage examples from 1998, 1999....etc that had the original seals/guides and didn't burn oil.

You wouldn't be doing the ones that didn't have issues right?

As with many things, parts DO get redesigned. So it doesn't surprise me that Ford has changed the part again in more recent years.

This is exactly what I did with my 1986 F-150 (5.0 EFI). It was consuming literally a quart every 500 or so miles. It was leaking a little, and consuming the rest without blowing out visible blue smoke. After just the first and second oil change with Rotella T6 5W-40, I could already tell it was using less oil. I also swapped the oil out after 500 miles the first two times. You wouldn't believe how BLACK the oil was at 500 miles. Solid black. Talk about serious cleaning. That, plus it must have reconditioned some seals/gaskets because I literally stopped dripping ANY oil 100% by 3000 miles of my new oil choice.

So I decided to stick with 5W-40 Rotella T6 in that 5.0, and I still have the beast and it runs better than ever. Oil consumption went from a quart+ every 500 miles to less than a quart every 1500 miles.

I can't remember if the truck had the same PCV screen as the car (is the valve in the valve cover or the back of the intake?) but if it does, and it plugs up (which it is known to do) it will cause consumption in the 5.0L EFI engines.

Oil on the valve stem = oil burning, the seal is suppose to scrub oil from the stem...

I repl a half set(right bank)seals in my '92 Grand Marquis that was getting 600-800 mi per qt, it stopped smoking and consumption decreased to 1500 mi qt, good enough and I sold it probably a year later...

So if the guides were bad it would have soon knocked out the new seals, didn't happen... It and my '93 both got 10W-40, I have bit the bullet and now use 5w30 in my '98 & '07 Mercs..
