Here's my first UOA on my 1994 HD using Havoline 20W50 SL (car oil).

 -

It sheared to a mid 40 weight, which from all of the dino UOA's I've seen on Harley engines is about right. Many oils (some Castrol GTX 20W50 UOA's I've looked at) show the oil shearing to a 30 weight, so I'm not disappointed there--though it would have been nice to have seen it stay at least a heavy 40.

Wear is very good, as has been the trend for Havoline dinos as of late.

Enjoy!

HD engines can thrash even the syns and the "pseudo-syns" alike:

Note that both the Mobil 1 and the Castrol 20W50 Syntec sheared to 40 weights...

But the regular HD 360 (Harley 20W50 dino oil) did not shear so much--even with more miles:

The much vaunted Mobil 1 20W50 V-Twin oil sheared to a very, very light 50 (if not a heavy 40)...

Here are a couple Harley Syn3 UOA's. In the first one, the oil sheared big time!

And Medic's Redline UOA is, as this Redline critic must wince to admit... very good!

So, by and large--especially where the wear metals are concerned--the Havoline 20W50 did quite well. Perhaps some Valvoline SynPower oil treatment would be a good idea for top offs in the future...

Dan that is an incredible report this Havoline oil is truly amazing.Do you think GC could have done as well, how about your favorite Redline lol.

The GC is too light for this application, I would think. HD calls for a 20W50, probably because the engine needs at least a 40 weight, and they believe that most 20W50's will shear.

I have often wondered about GC in this engine. Considering that these engines can shear oils down to a 30wt and GC is almost a 40wt that will not shear, it would be interesting to see what would happen if someone did run GC. You have to figure that the engineers who built this engine knew that the oil was going to shear and therefore, designed the engine for a 40 wt or lighter oil.

There is absolutely positively no way GC could protect this type of engine the way this 20w50 Havoline did. Remenber this is a pcmo that Dan used in this engine and got incredible results. If you look at the uoa on this site with the numbers Havoline returns, i cant see why anyone would waste there money using a full synthetic.

That sounds like a challenge to me. I just might try GC in my EVO II.
