It looks like the sun hasn't risen yet, it's that dark. Luckily, the marine layer keeps the smoke and soot particles mostly at a higher altitude. It is raining ash, though. The smell is not too bad. In the afternoon a westerly wind is expected to blow the mess inland towards the Central Valley. There they won't have the benefit of the marine layer.
