Recieved a hand me down Generac 5500/6500 prtable gasoline generator. It has a 10hp B&S engine with splash lubrication. I actually have two questions, I can not find any info on Oil for it, 30 weight? or something different?. It smokes moderately (oil bypassing rings, as spark plug is oil coated as well). Is there anything to do for the smoking condition?

get it the nicoderm patch!!!

Its a generac. What did u expect with a briggs.

Use a hm 10w30 oil.

Congrats, Briggs are some tough little engines. 30wt should be good, they are not very picky. I have put nitro, nitrous oxide, and racing fuel in them with no problems. Does it smoke all the time or just on start up. Could be possible overfilled on oil? Most the time these engines outlive whatever they are attached to.

I thought nicoderm as soon as I typed it

. It smokes all the time, but will clear for a few minutes here and there. By it's condition the PO was not the most maint concious.

I did mention it was free, right

Bardahl No Smoke might stop the smoking but it will not correct the cause of smoking. Sounds like it needs a ring and hone job. Might get by with a set of fresh rings but if you're going that far, a hone job or possibly over-bore and over-sized rings might be necessary.

See if it has any sort of crankcase vent and if that's plugged.

If you buy a new engine, make sure it has the tapered crank genny's need.

Unless you plan on using it all the time, I'd let it smoke. you can buy a lot of oil for the price of reringing it, or buying a new engine. any straight 30,40 or 50 weight, 15w40, 20w-50, etc.. should work perfectly fine and help with the consumption.

Had smoking oil problem and oil loss with 18.5 hp B&S Intek. Oil also went black after recent oil change. Thought it might be the rings, but pulled the head yesterday to check and it was a blown head gasket. Oil was leaking back into cylinder after shutdown. Replaced gasket and reinstalled head per B&S Manual, and it's running good now with no more smoking.
