I have a Kohler 17 Kw generator with a 25hp 4 cyl. Ford engine. It runs once a week for a half hour (25hr./yr) plus a few hours a year during electrical outages. This is in Michigan and the unit does have a circulating coolant heater and it runs on natural gas.

The manufacturer says a one year OCI is fine and recommends a spring change to clean out the cold weather associated contaminants (moisture, etc.).

Do you guys have any thoughts on this schedule? Would a different time of year be better?

IF the engine is run less than total of 25 hrs, this OCi is satisfactory.

Change every 25 hrs if run more than 25 hrs/yr.

I'll follow up on this one. Does it have an oil filter? If it has an oil filter, I would probably go 50 hours, but if it doesn't 25 hours would be the max. I agree that a spring change is the time to do it if it is done on a yearly basis.

This is the ford 1500 engine? run on natural gas and when run long enough for the OIL to reach operating temps, Which it should by your post. Unless the half hour excersize is at idle the oil will go at least 100 hours from my experience whith that engine in floor sweepers.I would go with the manufactures recommendations . Natural gas is about the cleanest feul that can be run in an engine. Sounds like an expensive backup generator setup.
