Note however that the study was focused on Non Start Stop vehicles - ie: the start events were your traditional key off key on type starts.
 
so the main thing I'd look at would be what happens to the oil film between the rings and cyl walls during the 45 seconds or less stop. If the film breaks and the ring metal physically rests on the cyl wall, then there will be an infinitesimally small moment where the metal-to-metal contact rubs as it breaks free and then onto supporting oil film. Over years, that would begin to add up. This, of course, might be mitigated by material and finishing choices to where it's not significant over the life of the engine. So again, it comes down to design, and unless we see what their engineers assessed and designed to, it's all guesswork.
