Analysis of the Analysis,

Disclaimer: I don't by any stretch of the imagination proclaim to be an expert in any of this, this is just my personal observation based on my personal experience of being a semi-intelligent human being who can interpret data given to them by another party.

I've got a 2000 Grand Cherokee with 115,000 some-odd miles on it, she purrs like a kitten, no problems yet, it's been through 5 Blackstone lab reports, and yes I'm too lazy to post them.

I've also got an 2005 Ford F150 5.4 with 33,000 some-odd miles on it that's been through 5 Blackstone Lab reports, and yes I'm too lazy to post those as well.

Here's my 2 cents as to what the analysis reveal so far, take it or leave it, your mileage may vary, if you come up with the same results that's great, lets compare notes, yadda yadda:

The 4.0 doesn't seem to like 5w30 as much as 10w30. I've run just about all Castrol Syntec Blend in this motor, tossing in a "mix" of a quart of Green GC and redline 5w30 and those 2 seem to do the motor no good in terms of wear. I live in new england and I have not spec'd the oils out for wear in colder climates as maybe I should, but simply looking at the numbers, the 10w30 is better across the board. WRT filters, I've been running the M1-204 and the PureOne 14670, niether one outshines the other at the moment, all I know is the motor purrs and if I could find an FL820-S equivalent for this motor I'd go for it, who knows? Maybe one will fit.

With my 5.4 Ford motor, having Syntec blend, syntec, redline, or even GC in the motor didn't really matter, my best wear numbers were with predominantly with Motorcraft 5w-20 Blend. Mind you I'm a bit of a nut, I do blend my oils most all the time: 1 quart redline, 1 quart GC, and the rest what I am supposed to use. The straight MC blend showed better wear numbers. As to filters....and I must swear on grandma's grave on this one because you all are going to think I'm some blue oval waving nut-job but I'm not, if it was different I'd say so, the FL820-S showed better wear numbers than both the M1-210 and PureOne 24651.

Like I said, this is just what I got for results, your mileage may vary, and what are we talking about here anyways for differences? yes, a couple of parts-per-million and that's it. I expect to be thoroughly ridiculed by the oil geek regulars here, but...hopefully someone has some other results that match mine somewhere and we can go 300K together.

Actually, I don't think you're a "blue oval waving nut-job" at all. I think you're just confirming what many Ford V8 owners (especially the 4.6 liter V8s) have known for a long time. You can't beat the FL-820S for this engine. It has to be the best value in oil filters. There doesn't seem to be many Castrol fans on this site, but I'm one of them, and I think it's a great oil in these engines also. I must admit, however, I've really been enjoying my most recent oil change to the Motorcraft 5W-20. It seems to have given new life to my 13-year-old 4.6 in my T-Bird.

Good post. My experience would tend to agree with most of your observations.
